News from MCS

Dear all

Well, that was not the end of the term that we expected. However, given the weather outside as I type this, I think the call by the Local Authority was absolutely the right one. I am sorry for those of you for whom the decision has caused inconvenience.

In any case, we have much cause for celebration this term and more to look forward to when we return. Please see below for an extraordinary raffle run by MCS Friends, as well as a chance to snap up tickets to the wonderful Monmouth's Got Talent show - a student-run extravaganza that showcases a wide variety of talents from young people from MCS and across the county. It is a live and in-person show at the Blake, so please come along to support.

As you know, Covid regulations change again today for Wales, and as such the following points are the major changes in our Covid protocols at school after half term:

  • Face coverings are no longer compulsory. They are instead now strongly recommended, especially in mixed communal areas such as corridors and atria. Face coverings are welcome anywhere in school.
  • Students are now asked to complete a LFD test twice a week, down from three times. Tests continue to be available at school for students to collect.

The following core interventions remain in place:

  • All students must follow self-isolation guidance
  • Students must not attend school if they have any COVID-19 symptoms
  • Regular handwashing and respiratory etiquette by all
  • Adequate ventilation and appropriate levels of cleaning

Thank you all for your continued support of our school in a multitude of ways and in the context of continued challenges, as we continue to strive to provide a broad and balanced education that is of exceptional quality for all young people in our care.

All the very best for a restful and restorative half term break. Students return on Tuesday 1st March at the usual start time of 8.45am.

Monmouth's got Talent

This year, Monmouth's got Talent takes place at 7pm on Thursday 3rd March at The Blake Theatre in Monmouth.

The MCS contestants are:

Isla Davies – a singer-songwriter

Mia Donaldson – a singer

Outrun the Rain – a Sixth Form band: Ewan Bredemear-Walters, Rory Bredemear-Walters and Noah Ryder

Caelah Morgan, Darcie Morgan and Matilda Chidwick – a gymnastics trio from Year 7

Tickets are £5 each and will be available when students return to school on Tuesday 1st March.  Please note that it will be cash payments only, this is not on Parentpay.

This is always an amazing showcase for the talented students in all three schools - it's wonderful that it will, this year, be a live event at The Blake.  Please come along, we know our students will appreciate your support.

E-cigarettes and ‘vaping’

We have had a number of recent incidents in which students have brought e-cigarettes and associated paraphernalia onto the school site. It is illegal for anyone under 18 to buy such materials, and illegal for anyone to buy them in order to supply to a person under 18.

If any student is found ‘vaping’ on the school site, they will be issued with a fixed term exclusion. If any student is found with e-cigarettes or associated paraphernalia on them, they will receive an internal exclusion or fixed term exclusion.

We will take any decisions in line with our published policies, and we will dispose of any materials.

Gwent Music - Half Term Free Activities

Welsh Government have provided the Gwent Music Support Service with funding to provide a package of well-being support for children and young people through musical activities.

As part of the Musical Winter of Well-being project, the Gwent Music Support Service will run musical activities during February half-term, free of charge.

To enrol for any activity, please visit the Gwent Music website - Home - Gwent MusicGwent Music - and click on 'Parent Portal' or 'Enrolment'.

MCS Eco-Council

One of the Eco-Council’s key focuses this year is to reduce litter within the school grounds and local area.

On Wednesday, a team of 5 Eco-Councillors conducted a litter pick around Monmonth. This was carried out in partnership with the Love Monmouth Hate Litter group. A big thank you to Gaia Cobb McCafferty, Alex Orledge, Noa Rosier, Isla Stockwell and Hannah Whittington for partcipating in our first local area litter pick.

Well done Sam!

Congratulations to Year 13 student Sam Berry, part of the Dragons Academy Under-18s who were crowned RAG Championship winners after the most dramatic of finishes against Cardiff Rugby with Sam contributing to the score of 26-17 with a touchline conversion.

NSPCC Webinars

Both NSPCC Webinars have now taken place.  For those of you who missed either one or both of them, we have been advised that recordings will be available of both sessions.

As soon as we receive links to these recordings, we will forward them to parents and carers.

Winter Fuel Payments

We have been asked by Monmouthshire County Council to advise families of the new Winter Fuel Payment Scheme which has been introduced by Welsh Government.  They are trying to ensure that the details of the scheme are made available to as many people as possible in order to maximise take up and in particular to reach as many vulnerable families with children.
