News from MCS

11/02/22

Dear parents and carers

Our planning and preparation for the upcoming launch of Curriculum for Wales in September 2022 to Year 7 continues at a good pace. We have had excellent discussions with colleagues here as well as with our primary school colleagues, schools across the county and region, students and governors. Our vision is founded on a knowledge-rich approach, where the uniqueness of each individual subject is celebrated and planned for. We are fortunate to have both incredible breadth and depth in subject expertise here at MCS, and this approach is a very strong foundation on which to achieve the 4 Purposes for the new curriculum, as set out by the Welsh Government.

In other news, I met with MCS Friends this week - a fantastic organisation who are committed to supporting school projects and our students. Our two current foci with the Friends are (i) doubling the size of our library stock and (ii) funding a range of display frames and cabinets that will showcase student artwork across the school. All parents and carers are automatically members of this group, and I encourage you to go along to their upcoming meeting (details below) to find out more about what they do.

We have had further updates to Covid regulations from Welsh Government, and are reviewing our risk assessments and protocols accordingly. We will update you on key changes in next week's newsletter; any changes will take place after half term. In addition, the new documents will be published on our website.

We are developing subject-specific revision guides for students as part of our wider focus on revision strategies and techniques. Look out for details after the half term break. In addition, our extra academic provision and targeted interventions to support exam students steps up a gear next half term. We will communicate this out to families so that you are kept fully informed.

Kind regards

Vaccination Programme

HPV & Td/IPV/Men C

As you will be aware, we are providing the Aneurin Bevan Vaccination Team with the base for their vaccination programme for Years 8 and 9 next week (14/15/16 February).  If you have previously consented to your child receiving the first HPV dose, this form will also cover them for the second dose. There will also be a mop up session for Year 10/Year 11 students.

Students brought home consent forms last week, to be completed, signed and returned to school prior to the vaccinations.

The schedule is as follows:

Monday 14 Feb - Year 8 HPV Dose 1
(Pink headed form to be signed and returned from whole year group)

Tuesday 15 Feb - Year 9 HPV Dose 2 and Td/IPV and Men C
(Green headed form and yellow headed form to be signed and returned from whole year group)

Wednesday 16 Feb - Year 10/11 HPV Dose 2 and Td/IPV and Men C mop ups.
(Forms issued to specific named students only)

Students should wear a t shirt/vest top under their school top on the day of the vaccines, in case they have to remove their school top to enable easier access to the very top of their arm.

Should you have any queries about the vaccinations, please contact the Aneurin Bevan Vaccination Team on 01633 431603.

MCS Friends Association

MCS Friends are meeting next Wednesday (16 February) at 8pm in the Estero Lounge in Monmouth.

The group has become very small and would love to see some new faces. They have some exciting plans for the coming months that they will be discussing. Attending does not mean automatically being asked to commit to anything!

Come along, have a drink, and find out what they're up to.

Monmouth's Got Talent 2022

There's just time for students to send their audition videos in for Monmouth's Got Talent 2022.  Videos should be no more than 5 minutes long and should be sent to WildeR1@hwbcyrmu.net this weekend.  Don't be shy - this could be the chance of a lifetime...

Wondering what to do at half-term?

If you wanted to catch another great show involving MCS students, you might want to book for:

Winter Fuel Payments

We have been asked by Monmouthshire County Council to advise families of the new Winter Fuel Payment Scheme which has been introduced by Welsh Government.  They are trying to ensure that the details of the scheme are made available to as many people as possible in order to maximise take up and in particular to reach as many vulnerable families with children.
