Our School

In 1903 the Haberdashers’ Company erected an Elementary School in Monmouth, which was known as the Jones Endowed School.  In 1948 this became Monmouth Secondary School.  The school became fully comprehensive in 1977, catering for the age range 11-19.

We are an over-subscribed school of around 1,700 students and 160 staff, including an exceptionally popular and successful Sixth Form of up to 400 students and a Specialist Resource Base that will grow to around 55 students. There are 131 full and part-time members of teaching staff and 66 support staff.

The School is situated between the old road to Ross and the town bypass and faces the pleasant wooded slope of the Kymin.  The buildings and playing fields occupy a site of approximately 19 acres.    The extensive playing fields include floodlit Astroturf surfaces, extensive rugby and football pitches, an athletics track and basketball courts.  Many school facilities are widely used by the Community under the auspices of the School Governing Body and the Monmouth Leisure Centre.

We are located in the centre of Monmouth, and we serve the local community as well as other nearby areas in both Wales and England. We have the benefit of a magnificent new school building that was completed in 2018 under the 21st Century Schools programme. It is a wonderful modern facility that has education at its heart.

Our school community is founded upon shared values, honesty and mutual respect. Our culture of continuous improvement is driven by transparency, open dialogue, and regular student and parent voice. We are a happy and successful school, and one that recognises the transformative nature of education for our local community and wider society.

We are both inclusive and ambitious for all of our students, and we have exceptionally high standards in all areas of school life.
