Emergency Closure Protocol

How We Will Notify You

If the school is to be closed, we aim to provide notification as early as possible by the following means:

School Website: Our website—www.monmouthcomprehensive.org.uk—will be updated by 7:00am at the very latest. Look for the rolling banner on the homepage for the most current status.

Email Communication: An email will be sent to all parents via our SIMS Intouch database. We will continue to send updates via email as the day progresses and more information becomes available.

Social Media: Regular updates will be posted to our official X (Twitter) account: @LearnwithMCS.

External Sources: Information is also shared with local radio stations and Monmouthshire County Council, who will update their own websites and social media accounts.

Please Note: The School does not use Facebook. Any information regarding closures found on Facebook should be discounted unless it comes from a source you know to be 100% reliable. In the past, misinformation about school closures has been spread via Facebook; please rely only on our official channels.

Factors Influencing a Closure

Any decision to close the school due to storms, snow, severe weather or other reasons is based on a careful risk assessment of several factors, including:

  • Whether the school site itself is safe for students and staff.
  • Whether the local routes to school remain safe for travel.
  • Whether weather conditions are predicted to worsen, potentially making the journey home unsafe.
  • Whether staffing levels are affected by travel issues in surrounding commute areas.

Closures During the School Day

If weather conditions deteriorate during the school day and we are forced to close early:

Direct Alert: Parents will receive a notification via SIMS Text and Intouch email.

Online Updates: A notification will be placed on the school website and X.

School bus routes: We mobilise school buses as rapidly as possible to expedite the journey home.

Safety Planning: We ask that all parents have procedures in place to ensure their child is safe and secure should they arrive home earlier than expected because of school closure.
