News from MCS

19 01 24

The school year is punctuated by points of transition and change - Year 7 Transition, Year 9 Options and post-school plans for Year 13s are all examples of this. We had one such event yesterday evening – our Sixth Form Open Evening, which was again very busy and attended by a large number of students from other schools as well as our own Year 11 students. It is a joy to walk the school on these occasions, hearing existing Sixth Form students extol the expertise and enthusiasm of their teachers, and teachers talk with such passion about their subject.

There is a wider energy to these points of transition and change too. We are acutely aware that whilst we experience these events every year, for our students every year this is their one opportunity to make these important decisions that will shape their future. The poet Mary Oliver put it far more elegantly than I ever could:

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do

with your one wild and precious life?”

We are privileged to work with students and families through these decision-making processes, and are very proud of our Sixth Form, its broad curriculum and excellent student support, as well as its superb exam outcomes over many years. I am also grateful to our staff who do so much to guide students through these choices, and then through the courses we offer.  Diolch yn fawr iawn.

Very best wishes for the weekend to you all.

RS Department Year 11 GCSE Hinduism Study Day

Thursday 14th March 2024

A visit has been arranged by the RS Department to Swaminarayan Mandir, Neasden and Shayona Restaurant.  This visit will support GCSE students' learning on Hinduism, with a specific focus on worship and lifestyle.

The cost of the trip is £40 per person and is limited to 49 students.  These places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis when the trip is launched on Parentpay at 4pm on Wednesday 24th January.

Please nominate us - we could receive £1,000

Dear Parents and carers

Here’s a simple way that you can help us raise funds for MCS through the Friends Association. All funds raised go towards supporting activities and opportunities for students across the school.

The Movement for Good awards is an annual programme of giving run by the Benefact Group and this year they are giving away over a million pounds in donations and grants to charities - with your help.

All you have to do is click on the link below and nominate the school to go into a draw for a £1000 donation. There will be six draws over the course of 2024, the first on 29th January, and the school has the opportunity to win £1000 in each draw. You only have to nominate once and your nomination will carry over to each draw. The more nominations we receive, the more chance we have of winning a donation.

The nomination form asks for your name, email address, age and the country that you live in, but we tested this out last year and entering our data did not result in any emails or other data usage, but did win us a £1000 donation.

Please consider nominating us and click the link above or visit the Movement for Good Website https://movementforgood.com and search for Monmouth Comprehensive School Friends Association - Charity number 1137926. The first draw takes place on 29th January, it only takes a minute and the extra funds can make all the difference.

Many thanks for your support,

MCS Friends

Roddy Thomson Memorial Bursary fund - Y13

Bursary applications are open for Year 13 Sixth Form students at Monmouth Comprehensive School who wish to study a business studies course at university or through an apprenticeship.

The Roddy Thomson Memorial Bursary Fund offers long-term financial support to pupils who may need financial assistance to continue their education and develop a successful career in business.

The bursary is offered by Roddy’s former colleagues at M&G plc in collaboration with his family to honour his memory and continue his commitment to bringing out the best in those around him.

Roddy was Chief Operating Officer at M&G plc, and before that at Prudential UK and Europe. Prior to M&G, he was managing director at OpenReach. He was also a director at Ernst & Young and worked at Accenture earlier in his career.

The bursary will support students studying at MCS where Roddy was Head Boy and left a lasting impression.

Two students from Monmouth Comprehensive School were successful in receiving an award last year. Both students are encouraging Sixth Formers to apply this year for financial support.

Boris Hale, former Head Boy, and now studying for an apprenticeship said:

“The bursary provides unimaginable support and helps students with potential to advance themselves in an ever-developing world. Continuing your studies after school is a big change, and support financially is a rare opportunity.

The support has given me peace of mind, allowing me to fully submerge myself into my role as well as my studies.

The Talent Foundry support also helped with professional interview practice to prepare for interviews with potential employers.”

Cain Legg is now studying at Swansea University and said:

"For anyone interested in pursuing further education but are considering the financial costs involved, then I would highly recommend you consider applying for the Roddy Thomson Bursary.

It has allowed me to pursue my interests, meet new people, and open the doors to a rewarding pathway at university. I am glad to hear that other students will be able to benefit from this bursary as it has been very beneficial to me while studying at university.”

Students who are interested in applying for the bursary of up to £2,000 per year of study for up to three years, should speak to Mrs Guest, Director of Sixth Form.

The application form is available here: https://zfrmz.com/PAA0AbZ1KYHPOfpv2ToT

The deadline for applications is Monday 5th February 2024.
