News from MCS

13 10 23

Annwyl pawb/Dear all

I want to update you regarding a medical incident at school this week, which happened on Tuesday morning. A student had a physical medical issue that developed very suddenly, and first aid-trained school staff attended promptly. The ambulance service then attended, and there was a positive outcome for the student, which is a huge relief for everyone. The situation was extended and at times difficult, and some students in adjacent classrooms may have seen or heard things that have upset them. We are directly speaking to students (and staff) to offer support, and I am seeking further support for the school from external wellbeing agencies, but I want to emphasise that if your child speaks to you about wanting further support then please do let us know (via your child’s form tutor – details here) so that we can put it in place.

I am very grateful for a number of things in our school community that were highlighted through this event: the professionalism of colleagues as they supported the situation; the first aid training that we have in place; the calmness of other students throughout; the quick action of the student who ran to let a member of staff know the situation immediately; the care with which colleagues have checked in with each other and with students afterwards.

I wish you all a restful and enjoyable weekend.

Cofion cynnes/Kind regards,

Hugo Hutchison
Prifathro/Headteacher

Hi! We are the Head Student team; Sam, Edie, Phoebe and Matt. We are all really excited to be representing the school as Head Students this year.  We have already made a good start in our goals for the year. At the beginning of term, we set up our instagram (@mcsheadstudents) where we will post updates about what we’re doing along with news for the Sixth Form community. We have also met up with ‘Love Monmouth, Hate Litter’ continuing the partnership started by our previous student leadership teams.

With the support of the Prefects, our first meeting allowed us to explore the ideas for improving our school environment but also consider our impact on the local area! We look forward to developing this relationship and building in initial ideas throughout the year.

We have so many more plans for the year ahead! As a team, we’re focussed on building peer support, so we would like to extend the mentoring programmes across more subjects. This will allow students to pass on their experiences, providing fresh perspectives. Furthermore, our work alongside the Wellbeing Ambassadors will allow us to develop this peer support.

The Wellbeing Ambassadors serve as a dedicated sixth-form leadership team, committed to fostering a strong support system for all students in matters concerning personal wellbeing.  Our primary objective is to create an environment where students can openly express their concerns, regardless of how trivial they may seem. Systems are in place to allow students access to continuous one-on-one mentoring, and ambassadors are available around the school to check in with younger students whenever they feel they need someone to talk to.  Issues regarding social bigotry are also of the utmost importance to us and the well-being team, and we look forward to working in conjunction with the ambassadors to promote equality within the school, ensuring that every member of the school community feels safe and supported.

We are all keen to continue extending our community. We will be focusing on developing relationships with all the schools in the area. This is exemplified by Monmouth's Got Talent, something we all can’t wait to be involved with!

A busy year lies ahead for us but we’re confident that we can continue to bring a positive change to our school.

Sam, Edie, Phoebe and Matt

Gwentrek is a competition where teams of 4-7 complete a hiking expedition through a series of checkpoints and base camp activities, to test their Scouting expedition skills.

Well done Thomas.
