News from MCS

15 09 23

Annwyl pawb/Dear all

We are all now certainly back into the swing of things at school. New courses, new subjects and new teachers abound for our students, and our staff have all really hit the ground running. In addition, our new caterers have started very positively - I have spent time gathering informal feedback from students through lunch times, and they tell me that they are really pleased with the improvements, including the more diverse range of 'street food' that is on offer alongside main meals, salads and cold items.

You will have received a separate email yesterday regarding blazers (which return as a compulsory item from Monday) and on safe drop off and pick up from school. With such a large amount of vehicle and pedestrian movement in a short space of time at the start and end of the school day, we appreciate your support in ensuring the safety of all of our students, staff and visitors.

All the best for a restful weekend.

Extra Curricular Activities

We are delighted to share with you, on the link below, the wide range of extra-curricular opportunities available to students this term at Monmouth Comprehensive School.

All activities begin from Monday 18th September and unless otherwise stated take place between 3pm and 4pm in the rooms listed on the attached schedule.  Some of the activities may require students to sign up to enable our teachers to prepare effectively for their clubs.  These will be communicated in subject lessons and displayed in individual faculties.  A register will be taken at the start of each club but it remains the responsibility of parents whether or not a child is able to attend a particular session.  Clubs will run for 12 school weeks until the week beginning 11th December.

The school café will be open until 4.30pm on these evenings to allow students to buy refreshments both before and after their clubs.

Student Success

Congratulations to Lydia Lannen, Jess Rogers and Niarie Alexander Year 10. All three girls have been successful in making it into the Newport & District Schools U15s football team this year. This is great news. Lydia has retained her place from last year, while Jess and Niarie have secured a spot following successful summer trials.

It will see all them representing the team across South Wales for the season, and their first friendly is next week against Gloucester schools U16s Girls.

Good luck for the season, girls.

Well done to Nanci Edwards, Y12 Fashion and Textile student, who has reached the final of the Design & Technology Innovations Awards for her outstanding Fashion and Textiles GCSE project, based on the environment.

Her work will be displayed at the Swalec Stadium on Monday 9th October (9-5pm) and Tuesday 10th October (9-3pm) should you wish to see her work.

Judging will take place over these two days and, should nani win, her work will then be displayed at Bangor University.

Good luck Nanci.

Further congratulations to our Year 10 MCS Netball girls Bea Morgan, Izzy Cleaves, Ava Powell, Bea Bourne and Lola Jones who made it through to the next stage of the South East Wales Netball Trials.

The Year 10 team ended up finishing in second place in the tournament losing by 2 points in a very competitive final v Monmouth Girls.

Well done, girls.

Massive congratulations to Ava Powell 10MR who has been selected for the Wales Swim Performance Squad 2023/2024.

A fantastic achievement, well done, Ava.

MCS Friends - Round up of last year

We have had a fantastic year. With a small committee and the further help of some dedicated volunteers we have raised £7605.26 in funds for the school and spent £14,202.82 on projects to enhance and enrich the learning of all MCS students.

Thank you to everyone in the school community who has supported any of our fundraising activities. These have included the Christmas and Summer raffles, ongoing fundraising through Easy Fundraising, the collection and sale of second-hand uniform in partnership with the Bridges Community shop, and a very generous donation from a member of the wider school community.

In February, we were finally able to hold our first social event in school since 2019, our traditional curry and quiz night for parents, students and staff. The event was very popular with a delicious curry provided by the MCS catering team and a winning team of staff from the Science Faculty.

This year, as well as providing a significant contribution to the Summer Learning week (£5000) and to improvements to the library (£1500), we also introduced a new initiative where we allocated a pot of money that individual departments could apply for a share of. This has proved very popular with 3 rounds of staff applications this year. In total, we agreed funds to support 23 requests from 15 different subject areas and distributed just over £9,000 in grants; thus ensuring that money raised by the MCS Friends has contributed to learning and development across the school.

We sought to raise the profile of MCS Friends by attending Open Evenings to increase awareness of our work and involve more members of the school community. This was particularly successful at the new Year 7 transition evenings where a large number of parents signed up to receive ongoing information directly from us, and we hope some of you will now get involved in our work. We are also very grateful to Catherine Fookes, MCS School Governor, and Mr Hampshire, MCS Deputy Head Teacher, for attending our meetings and liaising with staff and Governors on our behalf.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported our activities in any way this year. As you can see the work we do makes a huge difference to what the school is able to offer MCS students. If you would like to get involved please contact us via moncompfriends@gmail.com; we have lots of plans for the forthcoming year.
