News from MCS

23 06 23

A momentous day today - it is the last of our summer examinations. Around 15,000 papers have been sat and, in preparation for these, there is a mountain of revision, parent support and encouragement, staff interventions, revision strategies - and of course many hundreds of hours of hard work in lessons in the years preceding. The main purpose of exams is instrumental, of course - they are the key to students having a wide range of options to choose from in their future pathway, whether that be Sixth Form here, college, an apprenticeship, university or the world of work. We are incredibly proud of all our exam students. I would also like to sincerely thank all MCS staff, especially our exam officer Mrs Roach and the invigilating team. What a superb effort once again.

We hope to see you at one of the school events happening over the coming weeks - and please do support the MCS Friends summer raffle if you are able to.

Very best wishes,

Hugo Hutchison
Headteacher

Summer Learning

During the last week of term (Tuesday 18th to Thursday 20th July) we are planning a range of exciting experiences across the school as part of our Summer Learning week.  These activities are designed to offer students different learning experiences to those available within their usual timetable.  The Monmouth Comprehensive School Friends Association is kindly supporting some of the costs of these events.

Year 7 will be visiting the oldest and newest castles in Monmouthshire and becoming expert archers and orienteers.

Year 8 will be able to test their metal with outwards bound activities, including caving, canoeing and climbing and discover the wonders of the beautiful Wye Valley.

Year 9 will walk along the Wye to the Biblins, crossing the river before lunch and compete in interform games.

Year 10 will be working in our local primary schools to deliver their well-being days to younger students and also ascending one of the highest peaks in Monmouthshire.

Year 12 will be exploring future pathways and looking forward to applying for university, college or apprenticeships.

All Key Stage Three students will also test their athletic skills and compete for their Form in our annual Sports Days.  They will also have the opportunity to showcase their performance and Welsh language skills in their own Eisteddfod.

For the most part students are expected to wear their PE kit for these three days and ensure that they have suitable footwear and outer garments for the activity and weather on the day.  More details of what is required for different events can be found in the letters below.

Detailed letters will go out to parents on Parentpay.

Student Success

We are delighted to bring you an update on how well Jack, Harry and George Sims are doing in their sailing.

Jack has been selected to join a Cape 31 race team in Cowes this week/weekend, alongside professional sailors, world champions and Olympians as his teammates. This is a huge opportunity for him.

Last weekend Harry came joint 1st at the Welsh Junior Championships in Dale. At the same event George came 8th despite having only just moved into this larger class.

Following success at the 29er Youth Nationals, where they finished as top Welsh boat, this summer Jack and Harry will be competing together in the 29er National Championships and the 29er World Championships. George will be competing in the Topper National Championships.

Congratulations to Y8 student Dilwyn Howells who has been selected to represent South Wales U13 Boys at the UK National Hockey Festival in Nottingham at the end of June.

The tournament is the most prestigious U13 hockey tournament in the UK, with regional teams from Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales taking part.

Dress a Girl (and a boy)

Our Year Nen students have been honing their skills as they are introduced to the new sewing machines, reading for their GCSE course.

Students have been making clothing for Dress a Girl for several years now and we would like to thank parents for their kind donations of money and material to allow us to continue with the Dress a Girl around the World programme.

Welsh Youth Parliament request

The Welsh Youth Parliament is currently undertaking a consultation on Sustainable Travel.

"We are hoping that the findings from this piece of work will help inform and influence the review on learner travel (as well as other WG transport related policies) and would therefore like as many children, young people and the parents/carers to complete the survey, using the link below. "

Outdoor Table Tennis

Just a reminder that we have table tennis bats available to use on our lovely outdoor tables.

We do ask students for the deposit of a phone or equivalent before they can take them and the student who leaves the deposit will be the one responsible for returning the bats/ball to Reception.

Obviously, students who are bringing their own bats in are still more than welcome to do so.

Community - NHS 75

Do you want your knitting skills to be a part of NHS history? In July, the NHS will be celebrating its 75th birthday. To raise awareness of the birthday celebrations, we are asking our residents to ‘yarn bomb’ their local community with NHS 75 knitting and crochet. The theme of the yarn pieces can be anything NHS related.

Send your photos of your dressed up post boxes, trees, bollards and more to ABB.Engagement@wales.nhs.uk and we will share them on our social media channels.

To be featured, please submit your images by Wednesday 28th June.
