Rugby

Llongyfarchiadau Charlie Price, 11EA, who played for Cwmbran RFC, winning the U16s Dragons Cup last weekend.  It was their last game of the season and Charlie got a try in the first half with the final score being Cwmbran 41 - 7 Penallta.

Charlie started his love for rugby with Usk RFC, playing tag rugby from the age of six, moving to Cwmbran RFC after playing for the Pontypool & District Schools team, where he was lucky enough to go on two tours to Italy.

Cwmbran went on to win the Tigers Challenge Cup U12s in Butlins, Minehead and were runners-up at a Rugby Festival U15s in Lisbon. They went on tour to Toulouse U16s last year, playing at the Toulouse Acadamy.

They were also runners-up in the U15s final of the Dragons Cup last year, so winning the Dragons Cup this year means a lot, as it was their final game together as a team before going on to youth rugby next year.

Cricket

Oliver Hall (7EB) has been selected to play cricket this summer for East Wales Under 12s.

Oliver is a member of Usk Cricket Club’s junior section and will be playing for the U13s and U15s this summer.

At the end of last season, he was invited by Cricket Wales to join their Winter Training Programme, following a successful season with Usk CC as a batsman/bowler and a selection session at St Fagans CC.

He trained once a week through the winter at Sophia Gardens with the U12s squad, and was successfully selected to join the summer playing squad in April.

Oliver will now look forward to representing East Wales in fixtures during the summer against Herefordshire, Middlesex Schools, Wiltshire, Hereford Cathedral School and Monmouth School as well as the other Welsh regions.

Well done, Oliver.

Roller Dance

Arianne Allford continued her skating success in her skating competition last weekend at Maidstone Roller Dance Competition.

She received a Gold medal in her solo compulsory dances, being ranked first place by all three judges, and received two Silver medals in her solo and duo team dances.

Arianne is off to the British Championships in June.

Good luck, Arianne.

Tennis

Max Swayne was fortunate enough to be selected to represent South Wales in the 14U County Cup Tennis Team who qualified for the National Finals in Nottingham last Friday to Sunday. It is a very prestigious event with many players ranked in the top 50 of the UK!

Sadly, no trophy this time, but a great effort from all the boys and some epic matches played!

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards

A day of celebration for our former students Hayden Morris, Dan Smith, George Handley and Emily Brown (and their mums) who received their Gold Award at Buckingham Palace earlier this week.

The Award was presented by Edward, Duke of Edinburgh - we are assured an amazing time was had by everyone.

MCSBC - Avon County Regatta

The rowing club had a great day of racing at the Avon County Regatta last weekend. We had multiple crews winning rounds with our J14 2x, WJ14 4x+, J18 1X & our WJ14 2x winning 2 rounds before sadly losing their finals.

The club picked up only the one win with our J14 4x+ coming through multiple rounds. The crew are Barney Shaw, Joseff Jones, David Casadesus-Hall, Marley Bee, coxed by Sam Chilton.

The next race will be our home race on Saturday 27th May in Monmouth where we will have over 50 students racing. If you'd like to support the Club, please come along, we'd be delighted to see you.

Hello Year 8s

If you are in Year 8 at the moment and are interested in rowing, or would like to give it a go, MCSBC (the school rowing club) is planning on running a couple of week-long summer camps to learn how to row (associated costs apply). Our aim is to get you from learner boats at the start of the week to actual rowing boats by the end of the week during the summer holidays.

Dates for summer camp weeks are below:

July Group - Mon 24th – Fri 28th - 9am – 2:30pm

August Group - Mon 31st – Fri 4th - 9am – 2:30pm

Any Year 8 students who are interested, should come to the meeting after school on Thursday 8th June 3:10pm-4pm on the main atrium steps next to Reception. You will get a chance to learn more about our club and the opportunity to learn how to row this summer.

Even if you cannot make the summer camp weeks, please come to the meeting to learn about our club as it will be great to see the interest in rowing.

If you are interested and are unable to come to the meeting, please get in touch via our email

mcsbc.monmouth@gmail.com

We cannot wait to welcome you to our club and our sport!!

Thank you.

Social tariffs: Cheaper broadband and phone packages

Social tariffs are cheaper broadband and phone packages for people claiming Universal Credit, Pension Credit and some other benefits. Some providers call them ‘essential’ or ‘basic’ broadband.

They’re delivered in the same way as normal packages, just at a lower price. Amid rising living costs, Ofcom is encouraging companies to offer social tariffs to help customers on low incomes.

How a social tariff could help you

  • It's available to those on a variety of benefits. If you or someone in your household claims Universal Credit, you could switch to any of the tariffs available.
  • It's cheaper than a regular package. Current prices range from £10 to £20.
  • Fast, unlimited broadband. Most tariffs offer superfast broadband at speeds over 30 Mbit/s – fast enough for you to keep in touch with friends and family, stream HD films or shop online.
  • You'll pay next-to-nothing to get set up. If you do have to pay any setup costs, these should only be small. Your provider should tell you before you sign up.
  • It could cost nothing to switch. If your provider offers a social tariff, you can switch to it at any time, free of charge.
  • The price won't go up mid-contract. You won't pay any more than what you agree at the start of the contract.
  • It costs nothing to leave. You won't pay a fee to leave the tariff before the end of your contract.
