News from MCS

Dear all

Once again, the talent amongst our students was on show at Monmouth's Got Talent, which is a joint event run by our Head Students and prefects alongside students from the Haberdashers schools. Each of our performers were superb, and all the acts were of a particularly high standard. Whilst pipped to first place, Anzhela Lypyznkza and Isla Davies were placed in second and third place respectively. Congratulations to them, and to all the performers (pictures below). Many thanks also to the students who organised and led the event.

I enjoyed a walk around school this afternoon to see the learning taking place - as ever there is such a rich variety, from English lessons with staff teaching dressed as book characters (Mr Jones as King Lear, Act IV is a highlight) to Year 9 making Welsh Cakes (thank you, Cameron, for sharing yours with me!). It's impossible to capture everything that goes on, but I hope that the 'focus on...' feature that we frequently run gives you a broad insight into areas of school life. This week includes items from fencing to hip hop and breakdancing - I am definitely not an expert in any of these, but it is great to see our students getting involved and pursuing their interests.  If there is an area that we have not yet covered or that you'd like to know more about then please let us know; we'd be glad to include it in future newsletters.

Thank you also for sharing stories about your child when they take part in activities outside school. These are lovely to read and share forward with the whole school community.

Readathon

In November, our students took part in a Readathon for the charity Read For Good, who purchase books for children to read and be read to in hospital. They raised money by asking friends and family to sponsor them to read as many books as possible, and they raised an excellent £198.50!

Our top reader, Maddie Vickers, received a £5 book voucher for her fantastic effort.

Read For Good have also gifted a voucher for our school library to purchase some books, so a big thank you to all who participated!

Student Success

We are delighted to have an update on Year 8 student Arianne Allfords's latest Artistic Roller Skating achievements.

Last weekend she travelled to West Berkshire to take part in their annual club completion. Arianne placed in all events she competed in, achieving a silver medal in her solo dance, gold medal in her duo dance and gold medal in her team dance.

Training is now full steam ahead as she prepares to compete in the British Championships for the third consecutive year.

Well done, Arianne!

Max Swayne has yet again been busy competing in tennis tournaments and came away with two great wins.

He firstly played in an 18U Grade 5 Tournament in Bridgewater which he won, beating a much older boy in the final. Then he played in an 18U Grade 4 Doubles Competition at Sherborne TC with his partner Jesse and, after some very tough matches, they both came out on top and won!

With these two great results, Max will hopefully get into the top 100 for his age group (14U) in the whole of the UK, which is a great achievement!

Congratulations Max.

We are delighted to report that Caitlin Walters (Y11) has won the Monmouth Rotary Club Young Photographer Competition.

The competition is organised by Rotary Monmouth through their Youth & Education Team and is open to all schools and college communities and those who are home educated, along with any other young peoples’ community organisations.

A brilliant achievement, Caitlin.

World Book Day

We celebrated World Book Day at MCS with a book swap in the LRC where students could bring in any of their unwanted books to school with a view to swapping them with other students for ones they haven't read. It’s a great opportunity for them to read a new book.

Students were also able to claim a £1 book token using the QR code on the posters in the library, which allowed them to choose a free book in the LRC, out of a choice of three, or use it as a discount in a participating bookshop.

The English Faculty dressed up as Shakespearean characters with other members of staff dressing as their personal favourites.
