News from MCS

24 06 22

Dear parents, carers and families,

Almost 9,000 exam papers later, we have a solitary exam left on Monday, and then the summer exam series will be complete. Many congratulations to all the students who have tackled this with resolution and endeavour. Thank you also to staff for their redoubtable efforts and to parents, carers and wider family members who have supported the exam students through a challenging time. Well done all.

Last Friday saw a glorious celebration of music here at MCS in the community Sing For Ukraine concert. As you will see later in this newsletter, it brought together community choirs as well as students from every school in Monmouth, primary and secondary. We were particularly pleased to welcome some of the local Ukranian families who are now living locally. Monmouthshire has the highest rates of Ukranian families in all of Wales, which is a wonderful reflection of the generous, welcoming and inclusive nature of our community.

A particular note of thanks this week to the School Council and other groups of students who have been co-constructing the new Health and Wellbeing curriculum for next year with staff. We are increasing the amount of timetable time dedicated to this vital aspect of the curriculum as part of our wider commitment to do everything we can to support students to be happy and successful at MCS throughout their time with us. We will be returning to students regularly for feedback on how the new curriculum has been received, so that we can continue the cycle of review and improvement. A parent survey will also follow this half-term, which will capture parent and carer views on Wellbeing and many other aspects of school life.

Please note that next week is a shortened week for students at MCS. Students are in school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday only. There is an INSET day on Thursday (30 June) for staff training, and we have our Jubilee Bank Holiday on Friday (01 July).

CRICKET

Well done to the U13 and U15 girls Cricket teams, playing against South East Wales Schools in the Girls Cricket Area competition. The girls performed exceptionally well, considering it was the very first time playing a game of cricket for some students!

Players of the Tournament : Megan Maguire and Alys Roberts.

Fantastic work, girls !!!

ATHLETICS

The Athletics Cup was a huge success for MCS this week with our U14 Boys and Girls team and U16 Girls team qualifying for the County Finals.

Some stand out performances included that of Jack Orchard, Year 9, running the 100m in 11.77 seconds, beating all his opponents a year older than him.

Sophie Flynn and Macsen Rees, Year 8, both won their high jump

Grace Tait, Year 8 came first in the javelin.

Ava Powell, Year 8, Nya Stevens and Carys Yoxall, Year 9, all came first in their throwing events

Will Chalk and Carys Hughes both won their 1500m with Carys competing a year up and Will achieving a fantastic time of 5.03.

Every student gave 100% in their performances and behaviour was exemplary.

They are all excited to be back next week competing and we wish them the best of luck!

One day to go...

The countdown begins for Mr Owen as he prepares to run 104.8 miles (the equivalent of four marathons) in 24 hours, hoping to raise £4,000 to purchase two defibrillators for the school.  The money raised will cover the cost of purchase, installation and training for staff.

As we go to press, Mr Owen has raised £1,670.  If you feel you are able to donate, you can do so on the following link:

WIN £1,000 to help your school rebuild their library – plus a £100/National Book Token for yourself!

Schools everywhere are doing their best to help children catch up with the months of learning lost during the pandemic, and yet reading for pleasure – which has been shown time and time again to be the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – is falling off the agenda. A study by our friends Read for Good – a charity which raises money for books for schools and children in hospital by getting children reading for fun – found that 81% of schools didn’t have a separate budget for reading for pleasure, while almost three quarters of schools reported decimated library stocks due to unreturned books during lockdown or library resources being diverted elsewhere.

It's time to get serious about reading for pleasure, and start rebuilding our schools’ libraries. We’re giving five schools £1,000 of National Book Tokens each, plus membership to the School Library Association, to help them rebuild their range of books and encourage reading for pleasure now and for generations to come.
