News from MCS

17 06 22

We were delighted to welcome Year 6 students and their families to MCS this week, in the first in-person transition evening for quite some time. It was a joy to meet everyone and to welcome them to our school community. Croeso!

You will see that Mr Owen is completing a remarkable challenge in just over a week's time, for a very worthy cause indeed. Please consider sponsoring him as he attempts to run 4 marathons in 24 hours to raise money to buy defibrillators for our school. CLICK HERE for the sponsorship link.

It has been very warm today, and although we have the benefit of a modern building with fresh air flow systems, it is important that we all look after ourselves in the heat. When it is particularly warm, we have shirt sleeve order at school, and students are informed of this at registration. Blazers must be brought to school, but can be kept in a bag or locker throughout the day. Ties remain on, and students change as usual for PE - they should not arrive at school in PE kit. In addition, we strongly recommend that students bring a refillable water bottle and keep sufficiently hydrated. Any student who feels unwell should alert a member of staff, who will call for healthcare support.

Are you in Year 8 and interested in rowing?

If you are in Year 8, are interested in rowing and would like to give it a go, MCSBC, the school rowing club, is planning on running a couple of week-long summer camps to learn how to row (w/c 25 July and w/c 1st August). Our aim is to get you from learner boats from the start of the week to actual rowing boats by the end of the week during the summer holidays.

Year 8 students who are interested, should come to an after-school meeting on Thursday 23rd June 3:10pm-4pm on the main atrium steps. You will get a chance to learn more about our club and the opportunity to learn how to row this summer.

If you are unable to come to the meeting please get in touch via our email – mcsbc.monmouth@gmail.com

We cannot wait to welcome you to our club and our sport.

Head Coach, MCSBC

Athletics Meet - Monday 20 June

Thank you to everyone who signed up for the Athletics Meet on Monday.

Students should arrive in school on Monday in their PE kit with a packed lunch and plenty of water and any clothing they may need to keep dry/warm but also a hat /suncream given the recent heat.

Students need to meet outside the PE office straight after they’ve had their registration mark, so around 8.50am.

We are hoping to return to school around 3.30pm approximately.

If, for any reason they are unable to attend they must let Mr Owen or Miss Biddle know ASAP.

Student Artwork Collection

This is the last call for GCSE and A Level Art students from LAST YEAR (2021) to collect their work.

Unfortunately, we cannot hold onto work past next week as we have work from this year’s students to store.

Please call Reception (01600 775177) to arrange to collect your artwork or see your art teacher if you are still at school.

Returning Text Books

If students have borrowed text books from any Faculty/Department for their exams, could they please return them either to Reception or to the relevant Faculty/Department.

Catching up...

Some of you may remember Rory Calderwood (a keen hockey player) who left us in 2019, after his A-levels.  In 2020, Rory started 64 weeks of intensive training to become an Officer with the Royal Marine Commandos. He passed out in December 2021 and has since been posted to the Commando Logistic Regiment at Chivenor, Devon.

Lieutenant Calderwood (pictured on the left) is currently in the Falkland Islands where, last weekend, he captained a team of 12 Royal Marines to yomp 56 miles in 18 hrs to recreate the journey the Royal Marines took to liberate the Falklands in 1982 as part of their 40th Anniversary celebrations.
