News from MCS

Dear parents and carers

You will be aware from my other communications this week about the current pressures at school due to levels of absence, and we are very grateful for the supportive responses from you. Thank you. We are able to return to being fully open to all year groups in person from Monday for the final week of term. We hope not to have to revert to remote learning any year group, but we will keep you updated as the situation unfolds next week.

A note on uniform: since the start of the pandemic, levels of advised risk assessment have led us to close the PE changing rooms to most students. This has resulted in students coming to school in PE kit on days that they require that kit. This is changing from the first day of next term onwards - from Monday 25th April onwards, all students must come to school in full school uniform. If they have PE then they should bring their full PE kit in a bag. There are plenty of lockers available, should they wish to store their kit until their lesson.

I wish you a restful and sunny weekend.

Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal

Bake Sale

Students have been asking our Charity Committee what they can do to help with the Appeal and, after consultation, the Charity Committee would like to hold a bake sale on the last day of term, Friday 8 April.  We understand you have already kindly supported the Comic Relief bake sale recently but if we could ask you to put on your oven gloves and wield your wooden spoons again to provide cakes/biscuits for our students and to raise money for the humanitarian crisis, we would be most grateful.  Once again, any shop bought items would also be very welcome.

Items should be brought to Reception on Thursday 7 April as this will allow the Charity Committee the time to prepare the items for sale.   Please do not send in any items for the bakesale that include nuts.

Once again, on a safety and hygiene note, could we request that you take a quick look at the following link: : https://www.food.gov.uk/safety-hygiene/providing-food-at-community-and-charity-events if you are baking at home.

Bench Update

Thank you to all those who have entered the bench raffle - we are currently standing at just over £1,300 to support the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

We are keeping the raffle open until Friday 8th April (last day of term) so there is still time to enter, if you wish to.  The winner will be notified on that day.  As previously mentioned, Mr Jenkins has kindly offered to deliver the bench locally.

Sixth Form Saturday Schools - May 2022

This current assessment period is an opportunity for students to prepare for and experience mock exams in authentic conditions and understand what they need to do for success in the summer exam season.  It is clear that although we have developed contingency plans, Welsh Government, Qualifications Wales and the WJEC are expecting a normal exam season to go ahead, as planned this summer.

In order to support all Sixth Form students to be successful, particularly this year, we are able offer an invaluable opportunity to have extended time with their teachers before exams begin in May.  Many subjects and teachers are able to support exam preparation during a series of Saturday Schools that will run throughout the next half term.  To ensure that students are able to join all available sessions, we have been able to put together a schedule for both Years 12 and 13.

A letter has been sent home to students and parents which includes the link to confirm attendance at these sessions but you may also find the information HERE.

Heading for Cardiff

Y11 student Alex Bond has just signed for Cardiff City U19 Squad.  Alex first started training with Monmouth when she was 11 and now trains with Longwell Green, Bristol and Gloucester Academy. Alex was part of the Longwell Green team who won the Bristol U16 League and Cup 2021.

Alex’s Cardiff City trial was originally meant to take place in October 2021 but a long term injury has meant that she had to wait until this week to take part.  Alex impressed the coaches so much that the usual additional trials are not necessary.  Alex’s long term aim is to get into the first team for Cardiff and from there move onto greater things.

Alex will be leaving us from Year 11, having secured her place to study Sports at Hartpury.

Good luck Alex.

Another win for Max

Congratulations are once more in order for Max Swayne from Y7 who played in another 16U Grade 5 tennis competition in Cardiff on Sunday.

After some strong opposition and many tie breaks he came out on top with 1st place!

Well done Max.

Welsh Honours for Toby

Y11 student Toby Chilcott was a member of the Wales Junior Men Development Waterpolo Squad this weekend, taking part in the Division Two U18 Boys' Inter-Regional Championships.

Following a busy weekend, with matches against Scotland Saltires, West Midlands, South East and East Midlands, Toby was awarded Most Valuable Player and Tournament Top Goalscorer.

Congratulations Toby.

Women in Maths

Jess Maylin 12GD was a successful applicant to the Women in Maths Programme at Cambridge University from 24-26 March 2022.  This residential programme encourages young women to study STEM subjects at top universities.

During the programme, students attend lectures and classes taught by Cambridge academics and meet current students and admissions staff. It's a great opportunity to gain an insight into what it’s like to study at Maths at the University of Cambridge. Attendees also had the chance to explore Christ's and Trinity Colleges, and take part in social activities and other maths-related activities alongside the academic lectures and classes.

GB SKATE Artistic Spring Solo Dance Festival

Arianne Allford (Year 7) took part in the GB SKATE Artistic Spring Solo Dance Festival last weekend and is once again training and preparing to compete in the British Championships due to be held over the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.

She received some exciting news this week - she has been selected by GB Skate to spend a day training with their coaches. From this group of skaters they will be selecting skaters to become part of their International team. Whatever the outcome, Arianne is feeling very excited and privileged to have the opportunity to learn with them and to be part of their training day.

Young Professionals Bar Mock Trial Competition

Recently, MCS took part in the Young Professionals Bar Mock Trial Competition, with a team of Y12/Y13 students working in a variety of roles in order to act out a court case and compete virtually with other schools.  This competition, run by Young Citizens, is open to 15-18 year olds from non-fee paying schools in Wales, England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Charlotte Painter tells us more “We were given two criminal cases with witness statements and evidence to look at and build both a case for the prosecution and defence and then prepare questions for the witnesses based on their statements. We held auditions for barristers and witnesses whereby we presented key arguments of the case to establish who would best fit each role.  We spent the following weeks ensuring that our barristers knew all of their key points and were able to question witnesses and deliver opening and closing speeches. Our witnesses learnt their statements in order to fully embody their characters and those taking on the roles of jury, clerk and usher jumped into roles to help the team practise as well as giving advice and ideas to the team.

We were incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to meet with our Chair of Governors, Mrs Smith, who has a wealth of legal experience and now sits as a part-time judge.  We ran through our cases to get a feel for the courtroom and took the opportunity to develop our advocacy skills and pick up some tips before the competition. This was followed by a discussion on pathways into law and an opportunity to ask questions about the legal profession and about Mrs Smith’s experience within the profession. The competition day was tense but the opportunity to see how other schools had interpreted the same statements and see how they developed their arguments was invaluable. We made the most of the legal professionals judging the various rounds by asking questions and learning how to improve our advocacy.

The day was really inspiring and gave us all a sense of what a career in criminal law may look or feel like, even if that is currently altered by the requirement for virtual court sessions. We all loved the experience and it was great to come together as a group of students considering similar future pathways and gain some practical experience.  We came fourth which is a great achievement as we were up against many other brilliant schools.”

Comic Relief roundup

A huge thank you to everyone who supported Comic Relief 2022 at the school - the final amount raised was £1632.30.

We had joint winners of the Design an Animal Nose Competition - Rebecca Lewis and Sally Vale-Jenkins.

Our runners-up were Ben Kulcarni and Jonah Mason.

Well done to everyone who entered the competition.
