News from MCS

04/03/22

The start of spring augurs revitalisation and renewal for us all, and students and staff have returned to school with energy and enthusiasm.

Amongst the bustle of daily life, a particular highlight this week was the fabulous Monmouth's Got Talent event, held at the Blake Theatre this year. I am proud to say that it was an unmitigated triumph for our students. The three-piece band Outrun The Rain (comprised of MCS Sixth Form students) were crowned as winners overall by a judging panel that included the town mayor, and Mia Donaldson was awarded second place. All the acts performed exceptionally well; a full review and pictures will follow next week.

I also want to recognise the superlative work of our wonderful prefect team in planning and delivering the whole production. Their expertise, patience and skill were highlighted by the managers of the theatre afterwards as being a credit to them all. Thank you to everyone who came to support.

Success for Iwan

Y12 student Iwan Scrivens competed this week at the Welsh Championships for Men's Artistic Gymnastics in Cardiff. Iwan won overall gold to become U18 Welsh Champion, against strong competition, with gold medals on pommels, high bar and parallel bars and bronze on rings.

His family are particularly proud of the perseverance and hard work Iwan has shown, especially as he has been unable to train in the gym for long periods of time over the last two years.

You might have followed Iwan's hard work and success through The Leader since he joined us in Year 7.  Many congratulations, Iwan.

Sixth Form - Next Steps

Molly Bradley

MCS has a history of success in students achieving their preferred pathway when they leave our Sixth Form and Molly Bradley is testament to this.  A number of students have progressed to read Veterinary Medicine at University in recent years and Molly hopes to be the next in line.

Mr Sinkowski, STEM Faculty Leader tells us "A driven student of exceptional ability, Molly has known what she wants to do for many years and has worked diligently to achieve her dreams.  Molly’s UCAS application was among the best we have ever seen, showcasing both her passion for science and breadth of relevant experience.  All of the universities Molly applied for clearly thought the same as us – all offered Molly interviews.

The interview process for Veterinary medicine is rigorous and challenging, a large number of students are interviewed for each place and only the best are successful.  As expected, Molly rose to the challenge of interviews and has received an offer from every institution, almost unheard of!  Having taught Molly for a number of years I was not surprised, she truly is an outstanding student.  Molly’s first choice is Nottingham University and I have no doubt she will find herself there at the start of the next academic year. "

Molly has received Veterinary medicine offers from the University of Nottingham, the University of Surrey, Harper Adams and Harper and Keele.

When asked what she would like the future to hold, Molly said "I'd like to be farm vet with my own practice.  I'm helping with lambing at the moment and I feel there would be more variety as a farm vet than working in an urban practice.  I'd really like to give something back to the farming community".

Keziah McCann

International Languages has a proven track record of supporting students in achieving places at Oxbridge to read a variety of languages. We are delighted to announce that this year Keziah McCann has been successful in securing an offer at Balliol College, Oxford to read French and Italian.

Miss Snook, International Languages Faculty Leader, tells us "Keziah is an exceptional linguist, who visited Oxford in Year 9, as an opportunity to experience life at the University and to experience new languages.  Keziah is a phenomenal student, who has a great passion for French, and now is embracing the opportunity to start a new language, Italian, alongside this at university.

Applications for Oxbridge are highly competitive and to be offered a place for languages is such an accomplishment and one which is so well deserved. We are so proud of her achievement and we wish Keziah the best of success in her pursuit of languages."

Keziah would like to specialise in translating literature and hopes world travel will feature heavily in her future.

Summer 2022 Exams - Statement of Entry

Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 students will have received their Statement of Entry earlier this week, to check that their exam entries and personal details are correct.

Entries - It is vital that students check their entries and discuss any concerns with their teachers now.  It is important that all amendments are made ahead of the deadlines set by the exam boards and not after the students have been issued with their individual exam timetables later this term.

Personal details – If students do not take the opportunity to correct their personal details at this stage but ask to do so after certificates have been issued there will be an exam board fee to pay. This cost must be met in full by the student.  Amendments to legal name or date of birth must be confirmed by birth certificate or passport before we can update our system.  Exam Boards use legal names and not preferred names. Students should complete all exam paperwork/exam scripts using their legal names.

The Summer Exam Timetable is now on our website and may be found by clicking HERE.
