Introducing the Student Leadership Team 2026/2027

Shwmae - we are the Student Leadership Team for the 2026-2027 academic year. As a team, we are excited by the opportunity to represent and contribute positively to the school and the local community. We have already begun by collating ideas from staff and students to create our vision for the future of MCS, and we have held our first meeting with Mr Hutchison to discuss our priorities and how we can work together. We look forward to making an impact this year! 

Here is a little more about us:

Noa

Shwmae, my name is Noa Rosier and I am very grateful to be selected as Head Student at MCS. I am looking forward to representing the school I've called home for the last six years and to support and celebrate every student whilst positively building the school’s community. As Cymraeg is my first language, I am very keen to continue to work on encouraging the use of the language throughout the school’s activities whilst celebrating our rich heritage in Cymru. As an active member of the school community, I would love to inspire all students to take part in all activities beyond the classroom that our school has to offer. I have found my time at MCS thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring and I would like the opportunity to pass on that enthusiasm to current and future students. Diolch.

Ella

Shwmae, I’m Ella Lloyd-Bradley and I am delighted to say that I have been selected as one of the four Head Students at MCS for the upcoming academic year. This school has given me so much and continues to do so, and I am beyond grateful for this wonderful opportunity to give something back to MCS and the wider community. My goal as a Head Student is to not only be a positive role model for all students, but also to serve as an active voice for the student body as a whole. We very much look forward to working with the Senior Leadership Team to develop and build on our school values, and further strengthen the community spirit that defines MCS through our actions over the next year.

Bronwen

My name is Bronwen Williams, and I am incredibly honoured and proud to be one of your Head Students for the next academic year. MCS has given me so many opportunities to grow, both academically and personally, through representing the school in sport, mentoring younger students in maths, and encouraging me to always strive to achieve my potential. As someone who is passionate about sport, I hope to expand extracurricular opportunities for everyone, giving all students the chance to get involved, have fun, and contribute to the strong community spirit at MCS. I am excited to give something back to the school by representing every student, helping to strengthen our community, and to build on the fantastic work of those before us, alongside our staff and dedicated prefect team. I am looking forward to making this a memorable year for everyone. Diolch!

Ellis

Hello, I am Ellis Hodkinson and I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to be one of the Head Students of MCS. Since joining Monmouth this year from Chepstow, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. At the start of the year I was lucky to get the lead in our school show, Legally Blonde. I am really passionate about expressive arts and playing sports and I am looking forward to building on the successes of MCS in the coming year. My aim is to ensure everyone is heard and their ideas and thoughts are highlighted by positive change in MCS. I have a plethora of goals for the coming year such as looking at pushing for more extracurricular clubs and active surveys to know what change the students believe would be right for them.

Congratulations to Raglan U16s (Tarran Evans, Seb Jones, Sid Jones, Ryan Lloyd, Mark Probert, Henry Taylor, Harri Thomas, Ioan Thomas, Jac Thorpe, Tom Thorpe, Oscar Wadley) who won their own football tournament at the weekend. What an amazing way to finish their time together as a youth team.

Layla Neale (9NPH) successfully completed her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh qualifying expedition over the weekend with Girl Guiding alongside her friend Rose Llewellyn (9SKE). 

Both families are proud of the hard work, team work, resilience and determination they have shown throughout the experience and learning new skills. 

Well done, both.

STRUK British Champs

Will McDonald (10ARI) and Evie Andrews (8APR) have had a successful few weeks representing their North Hereford P.C. team at mounted games.

They took the win and the Championship at Royal Cheshire Show and followed up their wins at the Welsh and English Champs earlier in the year by winning the STRUK British Championships, held at Dallas Burston Polo Ground, last week beating 15 other top teams in the process.

Both Will and Evie have been selected to represent Wales at both the European and World Championships later in the year.

Another busy weekend for Max and Lyra Swayne. Firstly, congratulations to Max for winning the Mens Grade 3 Doubles at Swansea on Sunday with his partner Sam. Secondly to Lyra for coming runner-up in the 14U Road to Wimbledon South Wales County Final held at Llandaff on Sunday.

Well done, both.

Refugee Week and Empathy Week Writing Competition: Results!

As part of our National Year of Reading celebrations, we recently ran a 500-word short story competition based on the themes of Refugees and Empathy alongside Haberdashers’ School and Monmouth Library. We are thrilled to announce that we had four winners in the lower school category and that we won the Sixth Form category too.   Please look out for their writing, which is being published over the coming weeks in the Monmouthshire Beacon:

As the weather looks to be warming up again, a reminder that all students should come to school with a bottle of water or refillable bottle to ensure they remain hydrated during the day.

Bottles of water may be purchased from the Food Hall, but parents may wish to ensure that refillable bottles are brought from home, to ensure student allowances are not eaten into by constantly purchasing them from school. Additionally, this reduces the use of single-use plastics at school.

Sunscreen and hats may also be advisable.

Please note that the Monkhouse free delivery into school service will be temporarily switched off from Friday 10th July and will resume at the start of the new school term. 

Please note that all students will be required to remove their padlocks and empty their lockers by the end of term at 1 pm on Friday 17th July.  The last week of term is always exceptionally busy with activities/trips, but it is important that students ensure that all padlocks are removed and the lockers are emptied.

As we will need to clean the lockers over the summer, ready for the start of term in September, any padlocks left on will be removed and disposed of, along with the contents of the locker.

Please remember, for September, that a padlock with a shackle diameter of 6.3mm (1/4 ‘’) is required to secure any locker.  To ensure contents are safe and secure, please do not use a diameter smaller than this as it will not secure the locker and the door will be easily opened.

Could we also ask that Parentpay accounts are kept topped up to ensure students can continue to use the Food Hall until the end of term.  Thank you.

The Lower School production of 13 JR takes place next week.  Tickets are plentiful for the first three shows but there are only 4 tickets available for the final performance.   Students have worked extremely hard to bring you an amazing experience and would be delighted to receive your support.   Please don't miss out on what will be a brilliant production.

As part of the Schools and Community Day at MCS last week, Monmouth Litter asked students how long they thought that different items would take to decompose in the environment and the results are in:

The 2nd column is the recognised average period for the decomposition of these litter items, and the third is the percentage of correct answers. Excluding outliers the results indicate a reasonable knowledge of this subject. However, we hope this has indicated what Monmouth might look like if litter was not removed by council staff, volunteers and those who care.

Interestingly, roughly 20% put plastic bag decomposition at 450 years and nearly 50% at 1000s of years whilst the true answer is 10-20 years. We believe that this distortion can best be explained by the successful campaign to stop single use plastic and the introduction of a charge for plastic bags in shops raising awareness of this litter problem.

We should all take heart from this as evidence of how we can change attitudes with effective campaigns. Now we just need to work on those campaigns to make sure they are informative.

Plastic bags do decay within 10 -20 years although the science is still out on how much they then contributed to micro plastics in our environment. It’s true that glass bottles , if simply thrown away, do take 1000s of years to decompose but, unlike single use plastic bags, they can be re-used or re-cycled.
