Uniform Policy Update: Consultation Outcomes, Suppliers and Cost Reductions

Dear Parents and Carers,

We would like to start by thanking everyone who contributed to our recent consultations regarding our uniform suppliers and the policy on school skirts. Your feedback has been incredibly valuable in shaping our next steps and ensuring our school uniform remains practical, affordable, and fit for purpose.

Uniform Supplier & Cost Updates

Feedback from parents and carers regarding uniform suppliers was very clear. You told us that you wanted more choice of where to buy items, that access to an in-person shop to try sizes on is vital, and that cost remains a significant factor.

In response, we have taken the following actions:

  • Reduced Costs: We have negotiated lower prices on key uniform items with our existing supplier, Monkhouse (for example, a school blazer will now cost from £28.50).

  • New Local Supplier: We have partnered with a local supplier, Black Mountain, to also stock our school uniform. This will be available from August 2026.

  • In-Person Fitting: Black Mountain has a retail shop next to their production facility in Ross-on-Wye, allowing families to make a short journey in order for students to try on items for the perfect fit.

  • Recycled uniform: we are very grateful to MCS Friends for investigating new avenues for access to recycled uniform, following the closure of the Magic Cottage shop in Monmouth.

Response to consultation on school skirts

Thank you to everyone who shared their views during the consultation on school skirts.

The feedback included a range of perspectives:

  • Parents and carers: There was strong support from parents and carers for moving to trousers or school shorts only.

  • Staff: Staff feedback aligned closely with parental feedback, and very strongly advocated for a change.

  • Students: Student feedback overall took a different view. We acknowledge their perspective, and it is very important to us that we maintain open communication and an ongoing dialogue with our students on this matter.

All feedback, including all individual comments, was provided to the Governing Body for their consideration. After a thorough discussion, the Governing Body agreed that the School will move to tailored trousers or tailored school shorts only for all students from Year 7 to Year 13, starting from September 2026. All other aspects of the school uniform will remain exactly the same. We will issue more detailed guidance in the coming weeks to inform everyone, and you can also view the video that we will show to students on Monday here.

Sustainability and Financial Support

  • Environmental Impact & Recycling Hub: A number of parents, staff, and students raised questions about environmental sustainability and how we can mitigate the  impact of this decision. During this transition period, the School will act as a collection hub for skirts. These can be dropped off with us to be recycled or donated to clothing charities.
  • Financial Assistance: We understand that changing uniform requirements can place a financial strain on families. To ensure this change is affordable for everyone, the school will provide financial support by supplying trousers or shorts upon request during this transition period to any families who need our assistance. We will also support any family who has already bought skirts for next year and who are unable to return the items to the supplier.

We understand you may have further questions about this transition. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us either via the main school email address or by contacting your child’s relevant Head of Year.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we implement these changes.

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)

Logan Price, 11LRO, has put all the effort in and consistently trains hard, every weekday.  Recently in March, Logan was selected for the MMA Cymru youth squad to compete for Wales.

In April, Logan travelled to Dublin to represent Wales in the Irish Youth MMA open, with two very close fights.  Also in April, Logan competed in Dragon fights, taking home the gold medal.

In May, he took part in the MMA Cymru Welsh youth championship and won the silver medal in his category.

Even more exciting - Logan has been selected to represent his country in the IMMAF World Championships in Abu Dhabi this August.

Congratulations Logan!

Logan is looking for sponsors and would hugely appreciate any donations towards funding his trip, as the event is entirely self-funded.

If anyone feels they are able to donate, Logan has a go fund me page set up, link below. Thank you.

The Welsh U20 Athletics Championships took place in Deeside, North Wales on 6th June where Sixth Former Sophie Steele ran the 400m hurdles and 800m races. Sophie is now the 400m hurdles Welsh Champion at U20 and also secured a bronze medal in the 800m.

Sophie now moves on to the Welsh Schools Championships in July.

Well done, Sophie - good luck in July.

If you thought the football season was over, think again! Raglan JFC U12s mixed team have had a stellar season, finishing joint top of the Monmouthshire Junior League U12s Division 2 as well as representing the club last Sunday 7th June as Monmouthshire Junior U12s Cup Finalists. They represented the club and, more importantly, themselves brilliantly, showing excellent sportsmanship and skill! We could not be more proud of them all!

Year 7 players included - Ronan North, Bobby Goodyer, Toby Evans, Jack Hinchliffe, Jacob Dembicki and Darby Watkins.  Archie Whitehouse and Erin Preston sadly missed the Final but contributed hugely to the success of the team. A fantastic effort by each and every one of them.

Roll on next season for more success on the pitch for Raglan JFC!

Congratulations to Sixth Form student Lauren Woodhouse, one of the winners of HCR Spark!

HCR Spark is an initiative run by HCR Law (www.hcrlaw.com) for Year 12 students in the Wye Valley area who are interested in pursuing a career in law.  HCR Spark has been set up in memory of former colleague, Keith Shawcross, who was a solicitor in the region for over 50 years.  The winners receive a Shawcross Prize trophy, £500 in cash, a one-week structured work placement during our summer holiday scheme and ongoing mentoring support and advice.

Arpinder Dhillon, head of HCR’s Wye Valley office (https://www.hcrlaw.com/people/arpinder-dhillon/) said, ‘After having submitted her video entry and attended an interview with me and Oliver Robinson (https://www.hcrlaw.com/people/oliver-robinson/) at our office in Ross-on-Wye, we agreed that Lauren is ambitious, personable and a determined young person, making her a worthy winner of the Shawcross Prize.  Congratulations Lauren!  We look forward to running the HCR Spark initiative again next year with the Year 12 students’.

Lauren told us "I was so pleased to find out I had won the Shawcross prize - it was certainly unexpected.  It's an amazing opportunity to receive a week of work experience and ongoing support from HCR and, of course, the £500.

When I saw the opportunity to enter this competition, I jumped at the chance.  From submitting an initial video entry to receiving an interview at HCR in Ross, it was an excellent experience.  I would encourage anyone aspiring to pursue Law to enter next year as the prize really is an amazing opportunity and will really help you build experience for the future.  I look forward to my work experience in July, and I am certain it will help me as I build a career in the legal profession."

Alex Rodda, Director of Sixth Form added: “We are incredibly proud of Lauren being awarded the Shawcross Prize. The legal sector is highly competitive, and securing high-quality experience can be difficult for those without existing connections. We are grateful to have a firm like HCR Law on our doorstep, who are looking to level that playing field by giving a springboard to local talent. We look forward to partnering with HCR again to offer this opportunity to future cohorts. We wish Lauren the best with her upcoming placement. Well done, Lauren!"

A huge congratulations to Amelia, Jessica and Ruby, who proudly represented the school at the NSEA National Championships at Hickstead, competing against the very best school riders from across the country.  To qualify for Hickstead is an achievement in itself, but to then compete so successfully on a national stage is a testament to the hard work, dedication and talent of all three riders. Their performances firmly established them amongst the top school equestrian competitors in the UK.

Amelia

Amelia enjoyed an exceptional championship, delivering a series of outstanding performances against the very best school riders from across the country.

Her achievements included:

  • 2nd place in the 1m Addington Qualifier
  • 4th place in the 90/95cm Championship on Fi

To be crowned National Champion in the 80/85cm Championship is an incredible achievement and a testament to Amelia's talent, dedication and determination. Across three days of competition, she consistently performed at the highest level, demonstrating exceptional versatility across both show jumping and dressage.

These remarkable results firmly establish Amelia amongst the very best school equestrian riders in the country and are a fantastic reward for the hard work and commitment she has shown throughout the season.

Jessica

Jessica and Eezie had a fantastic championship, gaining valuable experience and delivering some excellent performances:

  • Competed in the 80cm Show Jumping Championship

Ruby and Pedro also had an outstanding championship, demonstrating confidence and determination throughout the competition:

  • 9th place with a double clear round

Ruby and Pedro improved with every round, gaining confidence and increasing their pace throughout the championships.

In Arena Eventing, they produced a lovely round, finishing:

An Incredible Achievement

To have three riders competing at the NSEA National Championships is a fantastic achievement for the school. To have them all return with such impressive results against the strongest school riders in the country is something everyone should be incredibly proud of.

Congratulations to Amelia, Jessica and Ruby on a truly outstanding Championship and for representing the school with such dedication, professionalism and sportsmanship.

William McDonald (10ARI) and Evie Andrews (8APR) were recently part of a Mounted Games team that took the Championship at the Royal Bath and West Show following a tough 3 days of competition.

Will was competing with a new pony for him, Gus, whilst Evie was on her European Champion, Millie.

They were riding for North Hereford P.C. and up against 14 of the leading mounted games teams in the country and after a very close competition, they took the win in the final race.

The team won 3 out of the 5 sessions during the show and were presented with their prizes by William Fox Pitt, former World number 1 event rider and numerous Olympic and European gold medallist, and his wife, Channel 4 racing presenter Alice Plunkett.
