News from MCS
Newyddion o YGT

Prynhawn da i chi i gyd - this week's main item has been taken over by our outgoing Head Students. We are incredibly grateful to them for all they have contributed to our school community - over to them!

“Spending the last year as a Head Student has been absolutely incredible. It’s been a busy and productive year that saw Eisteddfods, conferences, open evenings, CHEF, presentations and lots of meetings. Throughout it all I have been so proud to be representing MCS and I will certainly have a Monmouth shaped hole in my heart next year. That being said, we are leaving you with a keen and capable, hand-picked team to continue working hard and achieving great things.” – Jack Painter

“Having had the good fortune to spend almost seven years here at Monmouth Comprehensive, I can say with confidence that the last 12 months have been the most rewarding. Stepping into the role of Head Student has been a goal of mine for as long as I can remember. Never did I realise the opportunities it would bring, from meeting with members of MCC and MTC, paying the schools respect to those we lost on Remembrance Day and giving tours to incoming students. It’s been wonderful to get a look into the future of our school and, I must say, I have full confidence that MCS will only grow from here.” – Mia Owen

“I couldn’t have enjoyed this last year any more than I did. Although it’s been stressful at times balancing the duties that come with being Head Student and my own studies, I’ve found it to be really rewarding. The opportunities I’ve had to do some public speaking were very nerve wracking, but I believe that I’ve learnt a lot by doing them. It’s been really nice to welcome in new people to the school I’ve called home for the last seven years, and what has been even more heartwarming is to see elements of my Year 7 self in those new students. I have no doubt that Monmouth Comprehensive School has a bright future ahead and that all those who pass through will go on to do great things.” Rani Smith

“I will forever be grateful to have had the opportunity to represent our school as a Head Student. This year as a team, we put a key focus on upholding the student voice and ensuring that ample opportunity is given for other students to voice their opinions on how we can continue to improve the school. The student councils had over 30 meetings this year in which they debated key issues faced at MCS and fed back on changes made to further shape them for future years to come. Another key point we wanted to make was increasing the use of Cymraeg within our duties, be it a “shwmae” here or a “diolch” there, improving the visibility of Welsh has been highly important to us. We’re sure that the next cohort of Head Students will carry these on and achieve so much more”  Rhys Doubtfire

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the members of our school community who have helped us along the way, both staff and students. We really feel that these people are what make Monmouth Comprehensive so special and we are very thankful to them for making this year so special.

Student Success/Llwyddiant Myfyrwyr

Well done to Year 7 student Rosie Williams who took part in a dressage competition for a charity called Manes and Tails and won first place.

Rosie helped raise money for rescue horses by taking part in this competition.

Good work, Rosie.

Huge congratulations to Thomas Sommer (Y11) who has been successful in securing a place as an Arkwright Engineering Scholar.

This is a highly prestigious award and has been the outcome of a very competitive, rigorous process which Thomas worked incredibly hard towards.

We wish him the best of luck with his future in Engineering.

The MCS NSEA team have once again been busy, competing at Allens Hill Equestrian Centre on 25th April.

Ruby competed in the Combined Training, entering the Dressage Prelim 2 and 80cm Show Jumping, where she achieved an impressive 4th place, qualifying for the Championships at Addington in October.

Amelia also competed in the Combined Training at 1m and delivered an amazing performance to finish in 2nd place, also securing qualification for the Championships at Addington in October.

A huge well done to both girls for some fantastic results.

Congratulations to Alys Roberts 11CWI who represented Wales in the Women's U18s Rugby Six Nations Festival recently.

Wales finished 2nd place, beating England, Italy and Scotland.

We wish Alys lots of luck in her future with Rugby.

Well done to Liz Jackson in Year 10 and Kacey Batty in Year 11, who have both been selected to represent Wales U16 in an International tournament in June.

We wish them and the team the best of luck.

Amnesty MCS/Amnest YGT

Amnesty MCS Event - a discussion on Human Rights with local councillors.

On Friday, 1st of May, students from Amnesty MCS and the Amnesty group at Haberdashers' Monmouth School, attended a Human Rights event with local councillors. Not only was this an excellent opportunity to network with other activists from the Amnesty team at Haberdashers, but it was also useful in helping our students develop their political awareness and confidence in asking the questions that matter to them.

The meeting, chaired by the head of Monmouthshire’s Amnesty International group, Hugo Perks, was held at Haberdashers and ensured that students had the opportunity to speak, be heard, and engage meaningfully in discussion. The excellent company (and excellent cake!) encouraged meaningful discussion about local politics, international policy, and ideas for shaping a fairer future.

Our students had a fantastic time and look forward to many more Amnesty events in the coming year, as we draw to a close what has been a very successful first year for Amnesty MCS.

SRB Showcase/Arddangosfa SRB

On Wednesday 13th May, our Silver D of E students canoed from Pencelli to Talybont.

They braved the elements, and made great progress, arriving in Talybont in time for lunch.  We had some really powerful paddling from everyone, and some awesome steering from Elliott.

Well done to all who are well on their way to achieving their Silver Award.
