My video this week can be found here.

Many thanks to you all for your support of this busy half-term; I am sure everyone is looking forward to the break, in order to come back revitalised for the work ahead. I am grateful to you all for ensuring that students are supported in being Ready To Learn, including being fully equipped, and with purchasing any new uniform items that are required. Please let us know if financial support is required with any of these, and we will support if we can.

All the best for a restful half-term break.

Welsh Senior Indoor Athletics Championships 2026

Further to our article a couple of weeks ago, Sophie Steele ran at the above seniors event at the weekend and recorded another 400m PB of 1:00.74.

She is now ranked 3rd fastest U20 female in Wales and is in the top ten of the senior rankings in Wales at 400m!

Sophie is looking forward to the outdoor season (April onwards) to see if she can break the 60-second barrier for the first time, and possibly try the 4x400m relays too.

Well done Sophie, we look forward to your next update.

MCS Juniors make their mark at Monmouth Golf Club

Monmouth Golf Club has enjoyed a highly successful season for its junior section, with several standout performances from students at Monmouth Comprehensive School.

Thanks go to 2025/26 Junior Captain Ioan Thomas for leading the junior players through the season, with many taking part in full club events and consistently challenging the other sections. With a junior section of over 60 players, the standard of golf on display throughout the year has been impressive.

Looking ahead, exciting plans are in place for 2026 under the guidance of Golf Professional Ollie Moss, focusing on continued development and progression.

The club is also pleased to announce that the 2026/27 Junior Captain will be Oscar Wadley, supported by Vice Captain Harri Thomas. Both have demonstrated strong commitment and leadership within the junior section.

Special mention is also given to Cai Barnard and Charlie Rolfe for competing at consistently high levels throughout the season.

The Monmouth NSEA team enjoyed another fantastic competition at Moores Farm Competition Centre on 8 February, delivering some brilliant performances across the day.

Ruby, Amelia, and Darcey all competed individually in the Show Jumping classes with Ruby achieving her first clear rounds in both the 70cm, coming 12th and 21st in the 80cm classes. Darcey also had a strong performance, finishing an impressive 6th place in the 80cm.

Amelia had an outstanding day, securing 5th place in the 80cm and an excellent 2nd place in the 90cm on Fifi, as well as 9th place in the 90cm on Pam. These fantastic results have earned her County Champion qualification at Hickstead in both the 80cm and 90cm classes.

A huge well done to the girls for some superb performances and results, a brilliant achievement for the team!

SRB Showcase/Arddangosfa SRB

Congratulations to our ALN students who received their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards recently.

Andy Woolley, the D of E Lead said:

"They are a great group of young people who completed their Bronze D of E with us. The expedition, over three days, included camping out near Brecon and completing a two-day expedition by canoe on the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal."

The group have also had to complete six months of volunteering and three months of learning a new skill and taking part in physical activities.

Most of the group will now be moving onto the Silver award with a new cohort about to start Bronze.

Wycliffe Big Boat Head – Race Report

What a fantastic showing from our school boat club at the Wycliffe Big Boat Head! Against all odds—and in conditions so wild we might have been forgiven for arriving by ark—our crews kept their spirits high and delivered performances to be truly proud of.

The J14s were experiencing their first experience of racing for the club, and despite conditions being their best to be off putting, they really stepped up to the mark.

The J14 boys’ quad powered through the challenging course with determination, earning a brilliant second place finish. Not to be outdone, the J14 women’s quad showed grit and skill, overtaking two boats in their category and securing a strong third place.

Whether it was the weather or facing up to our Novice Quad, their opposition dematerialised and they found themselves standing alone at the top of their category.

The J16 boys quad faced a fiercely competitive field and held their own, finishing eighth—a result that speaks to their perseverance.

Beyond the results, what stood out most was the resilience and cooperation shown by every member of the club. The way everyone pulled together, both on and off the water, was truly inspiring. This spirit is the foundation of our club, and we're excited to see how we continue to build on this positive culture in the weeks ahead.

National Year of Reading/lwyddyn Genedlaethol o Ddarllen

As part of our National Year of Reading celebrations, students have participated in some really exciting community projects at the library over the last week.

Firstly, last Friday, 17 Year 7 students, chosen for their reading enthusiasm and confidence, visited the library to read to nursery children. It was a wonderfully wholesome way to spend a Friday afternoon and the toddlers loved the exciting book choices and reading expression of our students!

Then, earlier this week, we were lucky enough to be invited to two sessions with the Bardd Plant Cymru, the Welsh Children’s Laureate, Siôn Tomos Owen. Both sessions involved an engaging character creation workshop, with whole plots and backstories being created from a simple scribble on the page. Even more impressively, the first session was conducted bilingually – our students actually wrote their stories in Welsh!

The sessions were fun and interactive, and students gained a lot of new ideas and an exciting experience; a lovely way to end a busy half-term. Although we're not sure who enjoyed the session most, our Year 8 students, or our Sixth Form Reading Ambassadors!

The British DanceSport Association (BDSA) is on a mission to unify the dance community and ensure every dancer—from grassroots to elite—has the support they need to thrive. But we cannot build the future of our sport without the people who are its future.

We are launching the BDSA Youth Advisory Group (BDSAYAG), a new initiative designed to put young people at the heart of our work. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals aged 16–24 to help us shape the purpose and direction of the BDSA, now and for years to come.

The BDSA is looking for young people who are passionate about dance, who have lived and learned experiences, and care deeply about improving outcomes for young people in dance sport. You might have faced challenges, such as barriers to your chosen pathway in dance sport, exclusions from activities, competition, work experience, or other opportunities. We also welcome young people who are already working in dance sport, have changed career paths, or are seeking a career in dance sport.
