This year is the National Year of Reading, and we are busy planning a wide range of events to mark this celebration. You can find out more in my video here.

Reading is of the utmost importance to our young people; it is an essential life skill that opens doors to their future. We feel incredibly lucky to be partnering with other local schools and community groups, forging productive relationships and creating inspired shared experiences for our young people together.

We firmly believe that reading is a gateway to new perspectives. Whether it is a gripping novel, a biography, or a graphic novel, 20 minutes of daily reading significantly expands vocabulary and builds cognitive stamina. Thank you for supporting your child’s journey as a lifelong reader.

All the best for the weekend ahead, whatever your plans. I look forward to welcoming everyone at the Sixth Form Open Evening next week too.

The MCS team competed in their first NSEA 2026 Show Jumping competition on 3 January at Moores Farm Competition Centre, and the team — Jessica, Ruby, Darcey, Amelia, Izzy, and Lucy  were incredible.

It’s been amazing to see this team really come together and continue to grow.

The girls’ riding, teamwork, and determination were fantastic to watch, and they should all be very proud of themselves and the amazing results they had.

Jessica jumped in the 70cm Grass roots qualifier and came 5th to gain her a place at the Summer Grass roots regional Championships at Hickstead.

Darcey jumped in the 70/75cm and came 3rd

Amelia Jumped in the 80cm on Pam and came 3rd. She jumped in the 80cm on Fifi and came 2nd and in the 90cm on Fifi and came 4th.

As a team in the 80cm Darcey, Izzy, Amelia and Lucy came an amazing 1st place.

And again as team in the 90cm Izzy, Amelia and Lucy once again came an amazing 1st place

Well done girls.

National Year of Reading/Blwyddyn Genedlaethol o Ddarllen

Monmouth is going ‘All In’ for Reading!

The Monmouth community is gearing up for an exciting year as the National Year of Reading 2026 officially launches this month – the biggest reading initiative the UK has ever seen.

This week, students from MCS and Haberdashers’ Monmouth School came together at Monmouth Library to mark the local launch of the initiative, reflecting the strong partnership at the heart of the programme.

Schools, libraries and community groups across Monmouth are joining forces to celebrate and inspire reading in all its forms. From joint author visits and competitions to storytelling sessions, exhibitions and community events, there’s something for everyone throughout the year.

Confirmed author visits so far include Alex Wharton, Daniel Morden, Ben Kane and Sion Tomos Owen.

As students and community members alike have shared, reading opens doors to imagination, learning and connection – and this year-long programme aims to do just that, together.

Whether you’re a lifelong book lover or just getting started, 2026 is the year to discover the joy of reading.

Stay tuned for events, dates and ways to get involved – and let’s ‘Go All In,’ or ‘Ewch Amdani’ for Reading, Monmouth!
