On Tuesday, three of our students and one former student joined an orchestra made up of young people from around South East Wales to venture to London and perform in the Royal Albert Hall in the Music for Youth Proms.
Gabby Harris, Owain Phillips, Sam Deighton and former student Sarah Powell were among students invited to join an orchestra of 150 young people, giving up their weekends over the last three months to be ready for the chance of a lifetime. The Music for Youth Proms showcases the brilliance of young musicians from across the UK in ensembles, bands and choirs. It is a showcase of what happens when young people are given the space, support and encouragement to express themselves through music.
And what an expression it was. None of the enormous number of young people appeared the least bit daunted by the occasion and their performances were simply incredible. Our students performed not just with the South East Wales orchestra, but they also performed a piece of incredible scale as part of an enormous ensemble in the first live public performance of 'Causeway', written by composer Aileen Sweeney and inspired by Celtic folklore. With lyrics by the poet Iona Lee, the piece celebrated the theme of building bridges and it was clear from the scale, spectacle and amazing performances that the bridges were well-built for our students to enjoy such a wonderful experience.
It was fantastic to have had the opportunity to witness Gabby, Owain, Sam and Sarah show off their talents and, based on this event, they will be part of many future events.
