Former MCS Students Win Prestigious Triskel Award

Congratulations to Morn — made up of former Monmouth Comprehensive School students Noah, Mae, Oli, and Rob — who were presented with the Triskel Award at this year’s Welsh Music Awards, held at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

The Triskel Award recognises outstanding emerging artists who are making a distinctive contribution to the Welsh music scene. Morn’s creativity, musicianship, and striking live performances have earned them growing recognition and acclaim across Wales.

The band first began performing together during their time at MCS, and their success marks an exciting next chapter in their musical journey. Their achievement is a proud moment for everyone who remembers their early performances in school concerts and showcases.

Well done to Noah, Mae, Oli, and Rob on this fantastic and well-deserved recognition — a true celebration of their passion, teamwork, and creativity.

Taith Cymraeg y 6ed i ‘Romeo a Juliet’/Sixth Form Welsh trip to ‘Romeo and Juliet’

AS and A level Cymraeg students went to the Sherman Theatre last week to see an outstanding bilingual production of ‘Romeo a Juliet’.

The students thoroughly enjoyed using their Cymraeg outside of the classroom, interacting with Welsh speakers in Cardiff and all enjoyed seeing a different interpretation of a Shakespeare play.

They were extremely fortunate to see this very popular play, before it continues on its tour, which includes The Globe Theatre in London, where Welsh will be spoken on stage there for the first time.

Being Unwell at School/Salwch yn yr Ysgol

A team of first aiders as well as the Health and Wellbeing Support Team is on site throughout the school day to provide First Aid. We are not able to diagnose and cannot be used as an alternative to a doctor’s appointment.

If your child feels unwell during the day, they should speak to the teacher taking their lesson who will call our Healthcare Support Worker to talk to them and call home to request that a student is collected, if necessary.

Please remind your child of this process – students should not be calling/messaging home directly, either during lesson time or during break.  Our system means that we are quickly aware that a student is unwell, that we know where to locate them and that we can then ensure they are somewhere comfortable and supported whilst awaiting collection, if necessary.

If, however, your child contacts you, please contact the school (01600 775177), explain the situation and we will then locate and speak to your child.  As mentioned above, Healthcare will contact you if your child needs to be collected.

It is useful for us to know about allergies, medical conditions and any medication taken regularly.

Following MCC guidance, we are not permitted to dispense Paracetamol to students.

Please remember, if you need medication to be dispensed by the Health and Wellbeing Centre, you must have:

• Medication prescribed by a doctor, in the prescribed box with the label attached and intact.

• Completed and returned to the Health and Wellbeing Centre, the Administration of Prescribed Medication Form – available from the Health and Wellbeing Centre.

When providing long-term medication, parents are responsible for noting the expiry date and replenishing supplies when necessary with the School.

If your child is unwell and unable to attend school, you must contact the School as soon as possible. The Absentee Line number is 01600 775284. This is a 24-hour answerphone: a message can be left at any time.

If your child is not present in registration or session 1 you will receive a text message. Please respond to this text message with the reason for absence.

If you are aware of any future days of absence for appointments or continued illness, please inform us as soon as possible.

Scholastic Book Fair/Ffair lyfrau Scholastic

A huge thank you to everyone for their support of the recent Scholastic Book Fair.

The books purchased raised an amazing £306 in rewards vouchers for the school to use for books.

It is wonderful to see so many students purchasing books to read for pleasure.

Frankenstein visits MCS/Mae Frankenstein yn ymweld â YGT

Last Thursday, students in Years 10–13 enjoyed a thrilling live performance of Frankenstein by The Arts Centre, Hounslow. Written by Jack Fairey and directed by Laura Hannawin, the production brought Mary Shelley’s classic novel vividly to life through inventive staging, atmospheric sound, and powerful performances.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity for GCSE Drama and A-Level Drama and Theatre Studies students to experience live theatre, which is a required element of both courses. After the performance, students took part in a Q&A session with the cast, gaining valuable insight into acting, direction, and professional touring theatre.

Afterwards, students said…..

Ella Evans 12CBR - Being able to watch Frankenstein inspired me as a drama student, it gave me ideas to use within my drama A Level.  It was such a lovely shared experience for me and my peers.  It was great to talk to the actors' afterwards.

Tomi North 11TGA - It was such a valuable experience to see non naturalistic theatre especially at a time in close proximity to my devising exam.  It helped me understand the techniques used in Brechtian theatre.

Wellbeing/Lles

The School Health Research Network is led by Cardiff University in partnership with the Welsh Government and Public Health Wales.  Every two years, learners attending secondary schools in the Network are invited to take part in The SHRN Student Health and Well-being Survey. The information collected in the survey is used to compile a bespoke report for each school, which supports their work to improve their learners’ health and well-being. Importantly, no individual learner can ever be identified within this report as only aggregate data is shared.

Please click HERE for more details on how to take part.
