Student Success/Llwyddiant Myfyrwyr

Another busy half-term in the Swayne household, competing in tennis competitions, whilst fitting in revision.

Firstly, well done to Lyra for winning the 12U Grade 3 Doubles at Sutton Coldfield with her partner Sophia, whom had never played together before! Also, well done for coming 3rd in the Cheltenham 16U Grade 5 singles on Sunday, remembering Lyra is only 11!

Secondly, well done to Max for coming second in the 18U Grade 3 Doubles at Winscombe with his partner Sam, taking the first set off the 1st seeds, then sadly losing on a match tie-break in the final. Also, coming 3rd in the 18U Singles Grade 3 at Winscombe.  Then, finally, winning the Bromsgrove Open (Mens) Grade 4 Doubles with his partner Jacob (even though they had never played together before!)

Y13 student Shane Williams has been learning to carriage drive with his horse, Mars, and has made remarkable progress. His coach, Robin, always believed that Shane could succeed using just one hand — and here he is, proving her right!

With his mum, Wendy, riding as his passenger, Shane confidently navigated a cone course, skilfully avoiding all the obstacles along the way. This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to his determination and hard work.

We are all incredibly proud of Shane and delighted to celebrate his success.

As well as becoming U12 World Champion, last weekend Evie Andrews (Y7) also became the Mounted Games U12 British Champion after defeating 23 other competitors in the British Championships that were held at the Onley Equestrian grounds.

Evie held first place going into the semi-finals and had actually won the competition before competing in the last three races as she was so far ahead on points.

An incredible achievement and we look forward to Evie’s next success!

And finally...on a lighter note, congratulations to Luca Roderick (Y8) on winning the Monmouth Comprehensive Fantasy Football League.

Luca has dominated the league, Liverpool style, leading from the front since September.

We look forward to seeing if he can defend his crown next year.

Year 8 Rowing Opportunity/Cyfle Rhwyfo Blwyddyn 8

If your child is interested in rowing or would like to give it a go and is in Year 8, the school rowing club is planning to run a couple of week-long summer camps to learn how to row. Our aim is to get them from learner boats at the start of the week to actual rowing boats by the end of the week during the summer holidays.

Dates for summer camp weeks are below:

Group 1 – Tue 22nd July – Fri 26th July - 9am – 2:30pm

Group 2 – Mon 28th July – Thur 31st July - 9am – 2:30pm

Any Year 8 students who are interested are invited to a meeting after school on Monday 16th June 3:10pm-4pm on the main atrium steps next to Reception. They will get a chance to learn more about our club and the opportunity to learn how to row this summer.

Even if they cannot attend the summer camp weeks, please come to the meeting to learn about our club as it will be great to see the interest in rowing.

If you and your child are unable to come to the meeting but wish to find out more, please get in touch via our email.

We cannot wait to welcome you to our club and our sport.

Does your child ski?/Ydy eich plentyn yn sgïo?

The annual South East Wales Regional School Ski Championships are fast approaching at Pontypool ski slope on the evening of Tuesday 24th June.

Last year, MCS entered a team for the first time, winning bronze in the mixed team race, with skiers Rufus Hiscox (Y9), Tomos Bisson (Y9) and Holly Bisson (Y12) going on to compete at first the Welsh School Championships and then the British School Championships later in the year.

The Regional ski race at Pontypool is an ideal introductory event for anyone who enjoys skiing and would be interested in giving dry-slope slalom a try. Ski and boot hire is included (and helmets can be borrowed) as part of the race, so no ski equipment is required.

If this is something that you think your child might be interested in trying, please contact Mrs Baker (wendy.baker@monmouth.schoolsedu.org.uk) who will pass your details on - or have a look at the link below for a little more information:

Student Safety at MCS

We would like to remind you that the front entrance to the School is for students to arrive safely on foot.  As you will be aware, pedestrian access from Old Dixton Road and the Burgage is limited with some areas having little or no pavement for students to use.

At the start of the day, the safe ‘drop-off’ point for students arriving by car is at the rear of the School in the car park accessed via the Dixton Road.  Please use the drop-off zone (the vehicle to pavement area on the left) and then exit the school site.   Please do not park in the parking bays to drop off your child/children.  If you need to park and come into School, please use the visitor car park located adjacent to the Leisure Centre, off the Old Dixton Road and report to Reception on arrival.

Students can be safely collected from the car park at the end of the school day from 3.20pm, once home to school transport vehicles have exited.

Your ongoing co-operation is appreciated.

Healthcare

If your child feels unwell during the day, they should speak to the teacher taking their lesson who will call someone from the PSO team to talk to them, find out what is wrong and liaise with Healthcare.  Our Healthcare Support Worker will talk to the student and call home to request that a student is collected, if necessary.

Please remind your child of this process – students should not be calling/messaging home directly, either during lesson time or during break.  Our system means that we are quickly aware that a student is unwell, that we know where to locate them and that we can then ensure they are somewhere comfortable and supported whilst awaiting collection.

If, however, your child contacts you, please contact the school (01600 775177), explain the situation and we will then locate and speak to your child.  As mentioned above, Healthcare will contact you if your child needs to be collected.

STUDENT ABSENCE – PLANNED AND UNPLANNED

As parents/carers you will receive a text message if your child does not register with their tutor and does not arrive at session 1 and you have not already reported their absence to school (Absentee Line 01600 775284 - mon.attendance@monmouth.schoolsedu.org.uk). Please respond to this text message, with the reason for the absence.

This should speed up the process of recording absences and staff will have more time to support students.

Your voicemail/email should provide as much detail as possible regarding the reason for absence, which ensures the absence is an authorised one. Please be aware that for repeated absences or patterns, you may well be asked for medical evidence.

Appointments during the School Day

If your child has an appointment outside school during the day, could you please let the school know in advance (01600 775177 or monmouthcomprehensive@monmouth.schoolsedu.org.uk) and provide physical evidence of the appointment - a screenshot of a text confirmation or a copy of an appointment card/letter no later than the day of the appointment.  If you usually email details of an absence to your child's Form Tutor, please also send it to the main school email address, as above.  This means that it is recorded at Reception and they can be signed out quickly, avoiding unnecessary delays. You may also wish to give your child a note to show their teacher, who will release them from class.

If we are not aware of a request to leave school, either via a message or a note, we are obliged to call parents/carers to confirm a child is leaving/being met at Reception.  If we are unable to make contact with a parent/carer, we cannot allow a student to leave the school.

Thank you for your support.

Rowing Coach vacancy at MCS/Swydd wag yn MCS

We are seeking to appoint a suitably experienced and qualified British Rowing Level 2 Club Coach to lead our squad of junior rowers aged 14 to 18.

We are the only comprehensive school in the country to have its own rowing club and are very proud of what the athletes within the club achieve at all levels. MCS Boat Club (MCSBC) has an outstanding history of competition at both local, National and Welsh International level. We have a varied, very well maintained fleet of boats, boating from Monmouth Rowing Club, just a few minutes walk from the School.

The postholder will play a pivotal role in developing and nurturing the rowing talents of our students, leading the delivery of all rowing activities at the school.

Please feel welcome to contact Mrs Laura Claypole, in order to discuss the post prior to application, or to arrange an informal visit.

Wellbeing/Lles

As we move through the summer term, we would ask that all students come to school with a bottle of water or refillable bottle to ensure they remain hydrated during the day.

Bottles of water may be purchased from the Food Hall, but parents may wish to ensure that refillable bottles are brought from home, to ensure student allowances are not eaten into by constantly purchasing them from school. Additionally, this reduces the use of single-use plastics at school.

As well as the water machines around the School, jugs of water are always available in the Food Hall to allow students to refill their bottles.

it's well established that reading for pleasure leads to significantly better outcomes for children – boosting academic performance, enhancing wellbeing, and fostering vital life skills like empathy.

But did you know that 1 in 5 children don't have a book at home?

At National Book Tokens, the annual schools prize gives five schools across the UK the chance to win £1,000 in National Book Tokens so they can fill their library shelves with new books. Each winning school will also receive £300 in cash to make improvements to their library space, making it fun and welcoming for all.

Draw your favourite teacher battling an alien, giving you a chance of winning one of the prizes - full details may be found HERE but you'll have to be quick as the deadline for entries is Sunday 22 June.

Lost Property/Eiddo Coll

As the summer term progresses, we'd like to remind parents that students should visit Reception for general lost property and the PE Faculty for any items left in the changing rooms.

There is often a considerable amount of lost property both at Reception and in PE and students should be encouraged to check if their missing items are there.

A reminder, too, that ideally all clothing should have your child's name in it, to make it easier for them to identify.
