Monmouth’s Got Talent took place at MCS yesterday evening, and it was a clean sweep again for MCS students, for the second year in a row! Huge congratulations to winner Evie Jones, who triumphed with a stunning rendition of Puccini’s wonderful aria O mio babbino caro. MCS band River Road clinched 2nd place with a high energy performance, with accomplished violinist Freya Piper completing the set in 3rd place. As well as our winning trio, the array of talent on show was once again really impressive from both schools.

Our Head Student team plan and deliver the whole event, alongside the Head Boy and Head Girl from Haberdashers, which is a really impressive feat of organisation. They all delivered a high quality event that ran incredibly smoothly, with support from prefects and our wonderful PEA team. MCS Friends provided refreshments as well, and we are grateful as ever to them. Please see below in this newsletter for the upcoming Race Night that Friends are hosting, which promises to be a really exciting evening.

Thank you to everyone who came along to support – the team sold over 200 tickets, which will in turn mean we are able to provide a sizeable donation to the Ted Senior Foundation.

All best wishes for a restful weekend.

Student Success/Llwyddiant Myfyrwyr

Congratulations firstly to Max Swayne for coming 2nd in a Mens Grade 4 at Faringdon TC, in Oxford on Sunday, beating the 1st seed in the semi-finals, but sadly unable to clinch the win in the final.

Max and his friend Tom also represented Usk in 18U team tennis over the weekend, beating both Dinas Powys TC and Whitchurch TC in both singles and doubles.

Lyra Swayne also played team tennis for Usk with her friend Megan in the 14U category, beating Allt Yr Yn TC in Newport singles and doubles.

Well done, both.

Staying Hydrated in School/Aros yn hydradol yn yr ysgol

We would ask that students come to school with a bottle of water/bottle to fill as they are often visiting Healthcare feeling dehydrated during the day.

A bottle of water or their own bottle to fill at school would help tremendously to keep them hydrated during the day.  There are ample water machines around the school to keep them feeling well.

Red Nose Day/Diwrnod Trwyn Coch

Following the success of previous years, we will be holding a Bake Sale for Red Nose Day on Friday 21st March, during breaks 1 and 2 to celebrate 40 years since the first Red Nose Day.

We would be extremely grateful if students could bring in cakes/cookies to sell, to raise funds for this increasingly important cause. Please drop baked goods at Reception on the morning of the 21st, and collect your containers from there at the end of the day.

Students should also bring in change if they wish to purchase items during break.

Diolch yn fawr for your support, it is very much appreciated.

Visit from successful Art alumni/Ymweliad gan cyn-ddsigybl Celf llwyddiannus

Recently we were very fortunate to be able to welcome back Oriane Pierrepoint, who is one of our talented Art Alumni.

Oriane Pierrepoint is an amazing portrait artist, and recently appeared on Bill Bailey’s Extraordinary Portraits (you can find this on BBC iPlayer here).

She took time out of her busy schedule to come to school to talk to our Sixth Form students about her work and her creative journey, from studying A-level Art at MCS, to accepting commissions from organisations such as the National Museum of Wales for the Welsh National Collection, to exhibiting in London with the BP Portraits Award.

During her A-level Art, her work began to engage with individuals affected by diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Dementia and people affected by strokes, and she has built upon a long-standing interest in the biomedical sciences. Her pieces confront society's unwillingness to recognise the difficulties faced by some of its most vulnerable members, and are informed by listening to the experiences and memories of the sitter.  Her recent work celebrates a wonderful woman from Newport who has fostered over 30 children and is an amazing role model and figure within the community.

It is lovely to see Oriane doing so well, and for her to be able to share her own story with our students was a real treat.

If you’d like to take a further look at Oriane’s incredible portfolio of work, please visit https://www.orianepierrepoint.co.uk/

MCS Friends/Ffrindiau YGT

The MCS Friends are a very small but dedicated committee of parents who fundraise so that our children's education can be enriched with experiences and equipment that cannot be covered by the school budget.

- Hiring of audio equipment for school performances

- A mock bar trial for social sciences

- Girls football kit

We warmly welcome your ideas, skills and time.

Sixth Form Blood Donation/Rhodd Gwaed y Chweched Dosbarth

There are still a few slots left for Sixth Form students, on 24th March, for a blood donation session at Monmouth Comprehensive School - 10.30 am to 12.30 pm and 2pm to 4 pm.

"Did you know that hospitals in Wales require 350 blood donations a day to support patients in need? We can’t supply our hospitals in Wales without you! Giving blood is quick, simple, and entirely safe. And the best part? You’re saving lives.

We need blood donors from all backgrounds to give blood to meet the daily demand and ensure we have enough for hospital patients. Just one single blood donation can help up to three patients as it can be split into its different components and used in various ways to help patients recover.

Giving blood is one of the most selfless gifts you can give to another person. By giving blood, you are potentially saving lives and helping patients with specific conditions recover and lead a normal life.

Who can donate blood?

We encourage and welcome most adults to give blood. There are some reasons people can’t donate, but not as many as people think! Anyone who fits in with the criteria below may be able to give blood:

If you are:

  • Between the age of 17 and 66 (for your first donation)
  • Weigh over 7 stone 12 pounds (50kg)
  • Healthy and not subject to medical exclusions"

Sixth Form students should use the link below to book:
