MCS Eco Council

This festive season, the Eco-Council is excited to raise awareness about the environmental impact of Christmas. Instead of buying new decorations, we have chosen to decorate the school's Christmas tree (sources locally) with creative, eco-friendly decorations made from materials collected from the school’s recycling bins. This initiative not only highlights the importance of reusing and recycling but also encourages us all to think about the environmental footprint of Christmas.

In addition, the Eco-Council will be exploring the environmental impact of Christmas trees. As part of this week’s Pause for Thought, students will look at whether a real or artificial tree is the more sustainable choice. We look forward to some lively discussions and hope to inspire our school community to make more informed choices this Christmas.

Wishing you all a Merry and Sustainable Christmas!

Swim Wales Championships

Update on last week's notice - Unfortunately, due to the poor weather conditions last week, some of the races were cancelled but Seren Munslow, Theo Bancroft, Seb Jones, Alistair Chalk and Oscar Evans did get a chance to compete at Wales National Pool, Swansea.

There was not a separate category for just 12-year-olds, they are mixed with older boys, but of the 12-year-olds entered, Theo finished 6th in 200m freestyle with a p.b time of 2.24.66 and 10th in the 50m butterfly with a p.b of 34.42 seconds.

The competition included students from all around Wales with all age groups taking part.  The students agreed they really enjoyed it, the competition was tough but it was an excellent experience.

Well done to everyone concerned and their behind-the-scenes support teams.

Visit to County Hall

Yesterday, students from Years 7, 8 and 9, alongside their peers from Haberdashers’, travelled to County Hall in Usk to witness Monmouthshire County Council becoming the first in the UK, possibly the world, to commit to becoming Deforestation free.  This means the council will make every effort to ensure it only uses products that are not linked to deforestation in any way.  Their presence in County Hall was to follow up on their initial presentation to the chambers in 2023 where they requested that the council make the change and, following a brief debate, the vote was unanimous – our students won a stunning victory.  This is an incredible achievement by a group of enthusiastic young people intent on shaping their world for the better.

This journey has seen the students engage with food providers like Castell Howell, visit the farms of people like RegenBen, and enlist the support of personalities like Kate Humble and Masterchef winner, Nathan James, as well as meetings with Welsh Assembly ministers.  They’ve given talks in the Savoy, at the Senedd and at Abergavenny Food Festival.  Their achievements have been hard won but it’s seen Monmouthshire commit to using the students’ very own recipe for a chickpea korma in primary school menus and they are now actively engaged in discussions with secondary school suppliers – they’ve been tireless in their endeavours.

As you may have read, they more recently presented to the YouthCOP delegation alongside Huw Irranca-Davies and the leaders of the Wampis Nation from Peru to show that this small nation has big voices.  They are making global connections to fight for a better future and we should be incredibly proud of them.
Llongyfarchiadau!

MCS Library

Community

Come and support your local panto at the Monmouth Savoy Theatre this Christmas! See familiar faces from Monmouth Comprehensive as the Savoy Youth Theatre join Robin and his Merry People in Sherwood Forest (which is surprisingly close to Monmouth!). Or perhaps they're on the side of the Sheriff of Nottingham; plotting yet another evil scheme for power and fortune... Book your tickets to find out!

Filled with local talent, plus local and nationwide professionals - you might recognise Maid Marion from Tik Tok commercials and, of course, our resident Baddie and West-End star, Robert Traynor; who's been terrifying audiences at the Savoy for the past 8 panto seasons (whilst also chilling out with Dizzie Rascal in a music video and enjoying free Beefy Burgers in their Christmas commercial). Plus, Friar Tuck has been spotted on House of the Dragon and Little John in Batman...to name just a few.

Shows run from 13th December to 2nd January, plus our BSL-Interpreted, Relaxed performance is back on Wednesday 18th December. Book your tickets by calling the Savoy Theatre box office on 01600 722467 or visit www.monmouth-savoy.co.uk today!
