Annwyl pawb

I am writing to alert you to a serious situation that, whilst taking place online, is having a significant and direct effect on our school community. You may already be aware of an issue centred in Year 11 regarding digital sexual images, including AI-generated digital sexual images. I have made immediate decisions regarding provision for a small number of particular Year 11 students, on the basis of the welfare of everyone affected. The situation is still rapidly unfolding, and we continue to be in daily contact with other agencies, including the police, children’s services, and Monmouthshire’s safeguarding team. If you have any information that can help, please inform any member of the Wellbeing Team (Head of Year, PSO or Form Tutor) at school, or ask to be in contact with the Safeguarding Team (led by Mrs Davies and Mrs Bailey).

The issue has been discussed in Year 11 assembly this week, and we will return to it again, both with Year 11 and with other year groups in an age-appropriate way. It is a tremendously difficult situation to address, and we are doing all that we can to ensure that students and staff alike are supported in this matter, including seeking specialist advice on how to proceed. If your child asks or expresses anxieties about the situation, whether directly affected or not, please reassure them that staff here are ready to support them if they want to raise concerns or discuss the situation with staff at school.

If you have any questions about this matter, please feel free to contact us. Additionally, there is a range of helpful resources on Hwb – please click here for the main page on keeping safe online.

Hugo Hutchison

Student Success

Former MCS student and member of the MCS Rowing Team,  Eleanor Lawrence-Preston, who left the school at the end of the last academic year, has come 7th in the country (7th out of 114 trialling that day) at U19 GB trials last weekend.

Eleanor is now at Wycliffe College.  Well done, Eleanor.

Deadline to book: 26 November

A reminder that, if you wish your child to receive the flu vaccine, the school nursing service will visit the school to offer students in Years 7-11a nasal flu spray vaccine on Monday 2nd December and Tuesday 3rd December.

The NHS recommends that your child has a flu vaccination every year.

It’s very important to protect your child from flu to make sure they stay as healthy as possible. The best flu vaccine for most children is a nasal spray. This is the vaccine that will be given on the day.

The online consent form and additional information can be found here:  https://linktr.ee/schoolfluab

To help make sure the vaccine is suitable for your child, and they don’t miss out, please take time to read the information and follow the link to complete the electronic consent form as soon as possible, before the planned vaccination date, no later than Tuesday 26 November.  Any consent forms submitted after this time may result in your child not receiving their vaccine on the day.

Should you have any difficulties accessing the above link, please contact 01633 431685 for further support.

There's still time to register and vote...

Voting in the Welsh Youth Parliament is almost at an end, so if you have registered to vote, please support MCS student Isabelle Ravenhill this weekend.

If you have registered, look for the Welsh Youth Parliament Election email (check your junk folder, just in case), click vote, choose the person you want to vote for, then confirm your choice.

There's still time to register using the QR code below and then cast your vote as detailed above.

It's a great opportunity to have an MCS student representing the views of Monmouthshire and would be an excellent experience for Isabelle.  Thank you.

New Digital Devices - Christmas 2024

Christmas 2024 is coming and MCC/Gwent Police have provided a number of digital resilience tips and information for parents/carers.

As the festive season approaches, families begin to think about preparations – gift buying, what films they might watch, what games to play etc.

It is not always easy to know how to safeguard children online, and which games, apps and devices might not be suitable and what we can all do to promote a safer digital experience for children of all ages. Shopping isn’t the only aspect of Christmas we need to be careful about. Setting up phones and all those other online devices, using social media and making video calls all need care to keep children safe.

How to Combat Online Bullying - this outlines tips to help trusted adults in responding to and supporting children who are experiencing online bullying.
