News from MCS

04 10 24

Shwmae pawb – we were delighted to hear that MCS Friends have received a significant grant from the National Lottery to support our Performing and Expressive Arts faculty. This money will go a long way to sustaining our school productions, which are of such exceptional quality, and which I know so many of you enjoy hugely. I am grateful to everyone who contributed to this successful bid, particularly our parent governor, Ceri Jones, who has led this process. Don't forget, you can also contribute to MCS Friends' superb support of our students by coming along to the Quiz Night next Friday - details below.

As the days get shorter through autumn, students are often travelling to and from school in the dark. Below are some tips and suggestions regarding their safety when travelling:

  • Students who cycle should have a helmet and lights. Additionally, students should cycle on the road and not the pavement. We did have a report of some pavement cycling last week, which is dangerous for pedestrians. If your child cycles to school, please remind them of this.
  • Students who walk are advised to have a coat and/or bag that has some reflective ability.
  • Students who are picked up by car should be picked up from the main rear car park from 3.20pm onwards, after buses have departed. Please do not pick up from the front entrance by car.
  • I am informed that the ongoing roadworks at the Dixton Rd/Hereford Rd junction will be completed by half-term, which will alleviate things considerably for all of us. Please remind your child to navigate these roadworks safely when on foot or bicycle. The overall Welsh Water project is due to complete at the end of this calendar year.

Additionally, we have had a report from a member of the public that an unknown car stopped by several students last week and offered them a lift. They very sensibly declined and reported it. Please remind your child that they must never accept a lift from someone that they do not know, even if they are in a group of students or even if the person appears to know their friends.

All the best to you for the weekend.

National Manufacturing Day

BTEC Engineering Visit To Tri-Wall UK

To celebrate National Manufacturing Day on 26 September, students from BTEC Engineering Level 2 and 3, Years 11, 12 and 13 were invited to visit the working factory of Tri-Wall UK, based in Monmouth. Students were treated to a tour of the factory, seeing how machines, processes and safety take place within the working environment. With the guidance and advice of Tri-Wall CEO Gavin Peters and Monmouth site manager Paul Kear, the engineers also learnt of the different opportunities and avenues for work and apprenticeships within the various fields of Engineering and beyond, encompassing machine maintenance, computer aided design, material testing, sales and business management. A huge thanks to the staff of Tri-Wall who were more than happy to answer questions and offer advice to students and provided a fantastic experience for learners.

The trip consisted of a factory tour to see machines in operation, a visit to the testing lab where impact, water resistance, compression and drop tests were demonstrated and explained to students with interactive examples. Finally, the learners were put in to teams and tasked with assembling a flat pack cardboard chair as quickly as possible, with some cryptic instructions. Congratulations to Ethan Watkins (Y11), Ellie Doody (Y12), Isabelle Thomson, Sarah Powell, Theo Phillips and Owen Maddy (Y13) who were the first to complete and sit on their chair, winning a notebook, pen and power bank kindly gifted by Tri Wall for their efforts, da iawn!

Thanks again to the staff and management at Tri Wall UK and the attending staff Mr Miller, Mr P Jenkins and Mrs Wadley.

Enhancing Support for Parents in Monmouthshire Schools - MCC Workshops

Dr Rob Brooks, Psychological Wellbeing in School Communities Team works to improve whole school community wellbeing by supporting school leadership teams to embed psychology in their practices. His colleague, Kate Jobbins, from Community Psychology, works to improve communities through psychology.

They are kicking off a series of tried and tested evening workshops to give parents of secondary aged children some ideas about how to support their children’s emotional wellbeing. They're open invitation to all parents and run from 6-7pm on Wednesdays via MSTeams. Here’s what they have lined up:

  • 2nd October: Supporting Your Child's Emotional Wellbeing
  • 16th October: Understanding Teenage Brains and Behaviour
  • 30th October: Supporting Your Child with Anxiety
  • 13th November: Supporting Your Child with Low Mood and Self-esteem

Please click on each date above to access MSTeams.

The feedback from these sessions will be used to shape more support options for parents, like groups or webinars on Emotion-Based School Avoidance.

Community Skills Opportunity

Are you looking for experience to help you develop a career in communications? Would you like to use your social media skills to help your community? Monmouth Town Football Club are looking for an enthusiastic individual (or team of two/three friends) to create a new social media profile for their Junior teams.

This is a voluntary role but will provide you with real experience of delivering a communications project. Members of the friendly MTFC committee will offer support to get you started. Please contact Football13Cath@gmail.com to arrange an informal chat if you think you might be interested.

NHS Guidance - COVID Absence Reporting

NHS Guidance

Can my child go to school if they have Covid-19 symptoms?

As COVID-19 presents a low risk to children and young people, combined with high vaccination rates in the population, there are no longer specific rules relating to it in schools, colleges, childcare and other education settings.

Children and young people with mild symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, or slight cough, who are otherwise well, can continue to go to school, college or childcare.

However, those who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people where they can.

They can go back to school, college or childcare, and resume normal activities when they no longer have a high temperature, and they are well enough to attend.

All children and young people with respiratory symptoms should be encouraged to cover their mouth and nose with a disposable tissue when coughing and/or sneezing and to wash their hands after using or disposing of tissues.

It can be difficult to know when to seek help if your child is unwell. If you are worried about your child, then you should seek medical help without delay.

Absence Reporting

Please advise school of any absence; please state your child’s name, form, and the reason for absence (please be specific not a general ‘Feeling unwell’)

You will need to advise school each day of your child’s absence unless advised by a medical professional they need to be off school for a specific time period.  School may ask for medical evidence in some cases.

Failure to advise school of the reason for absence may lead to the absence being recorded as unauthorised and may result in further action being taken
