News from MCS

20 09 24

I met our Head Student team today for our first discussions of the academic year. I know from the appointment process they went through (which is always run by the outgoing team to select their successors) that they have lots of plans for the upcoming year. First up for them is representation of the student body at our Open Evening next week, where they deliver a speech in front of hundreds of prospective students and their families. A great opportunity for them to hone their rhetorical skills, and one that I have no doubt that they will carry out with aplomb.

Another early project for them is a Clubs Fair, in order to raise the profile of the range of clubs that are on offer to students here, both in the school day and after school. We encourage all students to take advantage of the extra-curricular opportunities on offer, which cater to a wide range of interests. One example is our flourishing Eco Council, who take a leading role in our environmental projects. Some members of the Eco Council are also cooking with Kate Humble and Master Chef winner James Nathan this weekend at the Abergavenny Food Festival. This is part of the campaign that they started in their primary schools, to ensure that the school lunches served by the County Council should not be linked to tropical deforestation. They are competing in their former primary school groups serving up the famous Korma (Raglan, Osbaston, Kymin View and Undy). Best of luck to all of them – they have continued their passion for championing environmental projects into their secondary school interests here, and long may that continue.

All the best for a restful weekend.

Student Success

Last week, Will Chalk took part in the British and Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships in Co. Wicklow.  Will and the team did really well with Will achieving a top ten place and the team taking Bronze overall.

Well done, Will.

Year 7 - Using the Food Hall

Please remember that an automatic maximum daily spend of £5 is allocated to each student's account but individual limits can be set by contacting Mrs Jenkins in the Finance Department at the school:

jennifer.jenkins@monmouth.schoolsedu.org.uk

who will be happy to set the limit you require.  Please remind your child of their daily limit, which includes purchases of food and drink.

We know that the range of food on offer in our Food Hall can be a little overwhelming when students first start in Year 7 – especially as students are used to a limited offer in primary school and, more importantly, they didn’t have to budget to pay for their lunch.  It becomes a little more difficult for them when they are faced with such huge a choice but with a specific budget and they are often tempted to 'overspend'.

Please discuss this daily limit with your child, perhaps using the link above to go through to the menu/food list to work out the best value for their allowance.  You may also wish them to only access the Food Hall at lunch break, to ensure they have enough money on their account to purchase a nourishing and filling lunch and not spend it all on snacks at breaktime.  If this is the case, please contact us on the email address above and we can arrange for a note to be put on their ParentPay profile which will ensure the till operator is aware of this.  Ample water fountains are situated around the school, allowing students to fill up their bottles for free.

Full details of the menus may be found on our website, by clicking HERE.  At the bottom of the menus you will see the specials on offer every day in the Food Hall.  On this page you will also find a price list.

PEA Update

We have been very busy over the last two weeks seeing hundreds of talented students auditioning for Shrek the Musical. We have been blown away by the talent.

Callbacks are still underway and the final cast will be announced, ready for Thursday Open Evening launch rehearsal next week. Students have made the casting process a very difficult one for the creative team.
