News from MCS

07 06 24

Annwyl pawb

I hope everyone enjoyed a restful half-term - we are straight into examination season this first week back, and I know an incredible amount of work continues to go into preparation for the remaining papers to be sat. Well done to all students for their formidable efforts.

Well done also to everyone for a very smooth move to the new rules on mobile phones. Virtually all students are keeping their phones off and away all day (and confiscation numbers have steadily reduced through the week), and the Wellbeing Team are reporting that they are already seeing a positive reduction in negative incidents, because students are not accessing social media and other potentially harmful content. We have also seen improved punctuality to lessons throughout the day.

As promised in a previous newsletter, the updated uniform policy is available here on our website. It includes links to several retailers for suitable alternatives to our main supplier for generic items such as shirts and pleated skirts. I hope this is helpful extra guidance for September.

And finally - a plug for our hustings event next Thursday in the main atrium at 5pm, which will be hosted by one of our brilliant Head Students, Sam North, as well as the Head Girl from Haberdashers. The event will feature numerous candidates including those from the Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green parties for Monmouthshire. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions from the floor. Please do come along if you can; there is finite space, but we hope to be able to fit everyone in.

Hugo Hutchison

General Election Hustings at MCS

We are delighted to invite you to a General Election hustings event at Monmouth Comprehensive School, next Thursday 13th June between 5pm and 6pm. Confirmed attendees include the Monmouthshire constituency candidates from the Conservative Party (David TC Davies), Labour Party (Catherine Fookes), Liberal Democrats (William Powell) and Green Party (Ian Chandler). There will be opportunities to ask questions from the floor.

The event will be held in our main atrium, and is being hosted jointly with Haberdashers’ Schools. MCS students are welcome to come along - we particularly encourage Sixth Form students to attend, as many of them will be eligible to vote for the first time on July 4th.

We anticipate a busy event, and we do have a finite capacity, but we hope to be able to accommodate everyone in the event space.

We will inform you in due course regarding themes and action we will take in response.

Lead Creative Schools Project

We are thrilled to announce the successful appointment of Sam Densham and Stuart Bawler as practitioners for our Lead Creative Schools Enquiry. After two days of rigorous interview and activity sessions, our School Creativity Council, comprising both students and adults, agreed that Sam and Stuart's expertise and vision align perfectly with our goals.

The selection process involved engaging with four candidate teams, each offering valuable skills and directions. However, it was evident that what Sam and Stuart brought to the table resonated deeply with our students' enquiry: "Can a group of pupils form a 'Creativity Council', work as a team to become creative practitioners and consultants, and take the lead in training teachers in creative teaching and learning approaches?"

Over the course of ten sessions, our students will have the opportunity to work closely with Sam, Stuart, or both together, exploring the five creative habits of mind through a variety of activities. Together, they will collaboratively design an end product that reflects their shared journey and can be shared with the entire school community.

We are incredibly excited to kick off this creative enquiry at the end of the month and embark on a journey of exploration and innovation as we delve into the 2024-2025 academic year.
