Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus, pawb/Happy St David’s Day, everyone!

It was a pleasure to attend Monmouth’s Got Talent this week, and enjoy some deeply impressive performances. Congratulations to all involved, and felicitations in addition to Florence for a quite exceptional rendition of Feelin’ Good. MCS achieved a clean sweep of first, second and third place. Wonderful!

Ava Powell and Beatrix Morgan both represented South East Wales Netball at The Intercounties tournament over two days in The House of Sport in Cardiff last weekend .

All the best netball players from all over Wales came together to represent their county in this high-level tournament.

The South East Wales U16s were the only age group to achieve runners-up out of all the counties in Wales.

Bea Morgan as a goal shooter kept her cool and scored some amazing goals under pressure and Ava Powell, as a Goal Defence, intercepted so many balls and got some amazing turn-overs .

Well done to both girls for representing not only South East Wales but Monmouth Comprehensive School.

Monmouth's Got Talent

A fabulous Monmouth’s Got Talent Show!!

On Wednesday night, the senior head student teams from MCS and Haberdashers hosted Monmouth’s Got Talent 2024 at The Blake Theatre where the audience were treated to a wonderful evening of incredible talent from all the performers.

Rowan in Year 7 performed with maturity and amazing confidence for someone so young. Performing a medley of songs whilst accompanying himself on the ukulele, he is certainly one to watch for the future.

Evie in Year 8 performed for the second year with a very mature rendition of Bring Me To Life as performed by Katherine Jenkins. The audience was blown away by her powerful operatic voice.

Year 11 and 12 students performed as the recently formed RiverRoad band. Holly was a fantastic front women and performed with authentic energy, tightly backed by the fantastic accompaniment of Sarah on drum kit, Luke on bass guitar and Jess on electric guitar.

Year 11 and 12 singers Isla and Freya performed a stunning version of I Know Him So Well. The girls performed with maturity and such strong vocal quality. The audience were drawn in by their storytelling, beautiful voices and amazing acting skills.

Year 9 student Angie showed us her virtuosic piano skills with a performance of Debussy’s Clair De Lune. Audiences sat back and enjoyed a mature and wondrous performance.

Year 12 student Florence performed her own arrangement of Feelin Good, accompanying herself on electro-acoustic guitar. And wow, what an arrangement it was. Audiences were immediately hooked as soon as she began the atmospheric a cappella opening of the song. Florence performed with such maturity and totally captured the audience with her incredible voice and performance skills.

There was also a varied and talented set of acts from the Haberdashers, including two guitarists, a vocal duet and a soloist.

The three judges from the three local schools didn’t take long to deliberate and there was clearly a top three on the night.

MCS took a clean sweep of the prizes with third place awarded to Isla and Freya, second place given to Angie and first place going to Florence.

All the girls were thrilled and delighted to share the podium with such talented people.

It was a fantastic display of the talent in Monmouth and credit must go to Edie, Sam, Phoebe and Matthew for organising the event alongside the Haberdashers schools head team.

EFL Utilita Cup

The U13 Girls football were up at the crack of dawn Tuesday morning to travel to MK Dons Sports Hub to represent both the school and Newport County in the south regional final of the EFL Utilita Cup. Through the success of winning the area final in Bristol in January, the girls were one of four teams left in the UK southern competition. We were aware that we had a tough tournament ahead as AFC Wimbledon, Norwich City and Swindon Town were the opponents that we had to play

First up was Norwich City and although the team were nervous, this was not represented during the game. The team was quick off the mark and the opposition were on the back foot from the get go. Mia scored early and quickly added a second to her scoresheet. The team continued to play quick football with the next goal coming from Liz with Mia scoring to make her hat trick. During the second half, Norwich eased back into the game and scored two goals, resulting in the match finishing 4-2.

Next up were Swindon Town who played some fast-paced football but a goal from Liz disrupted their gameplay. Quick passing and moving from the girls consistently put Swindon under pressure with Alexis and Seren having great attempts on target. The team were awarded a free-kick which saw Isla score a screamer to make it 2-0. Swindon went on to score a goal in the last minute of the game to make the result 2-1.

The last team the girls faced was AFC Wimbledon and after having seen them play in the previous games, we were aware that this was going to be the toughest opponent yet. The team started out strongly with Lily and Robyn demonstrating strong defensive play and Cassie making some fantastic saves as she had done in the previous games. The girls continued to demonstrate resilience and determination in their game play which resulted in the team going 1-0 up with a goal from Liz who had been assisted by some great technical play from Rey. The game finished 1-0 and the final of the competition beckoned.

Winning two games along with a draw saw the U13s placed top of the tournament table, making the final against second placed Norwich City. The final was a different encounter than the game the girls had previously experienced against Norwich, with both teams playing some fantastic technical football. The girls on both teams, knowing that a final against the winners from the north was to be played at Wembley, were spurred on to reach the final The football on display was something to be admired with each and every player on the pitch giving her all. MCS went 1-0 up with a goal from Mia through some amazing football that involved all our players on the pitch. Norwich soon made the score even. MCS had the upper hand over their opponents during the match with a number of shots on target but the opposition goalkeeper kept the girls from scoring. In the last two minutes of the match, Norwich were awarded a corner from some great defensive work,  the ball was put in swiftly and deflected freakishly off the back of a Norwich player’s head and spun into the goal. Norwich were now 2-1 up and in the last ninety seconds of the game, the girls gave everything they could to try and score with the Norwich goalkeeper saving everything. The final ended 2-1 to Norwich and the Wembley dream was over for our girls.

The passion, determination, resilience and football ability demonstrated by the MCS girls was a credit to the school and the PE Faculty are immensely proud of all of them.

Squad: Isla Davies, Liz Jackson, Cassie Hart, Lily Cornish, Robyn Evans, Seren Bowen, Rey Aigbe, Mia Chubb, Alexis Waite.

Youth Speaks

On Saturday 24th February, both our intermediate and senior debating teams competed in the Rotary Youth Speaks district final in Maisemore, Gloucester.

The teams won in both categories against Monmouth School for Boys and Haberdashers Monmouth School for Girls in the local heats at the end of last year, with their topics ‘20MPH is definitely not plenty’ and ‘The environment is priority number one’. Saturday’s competition saw them competing against schools from Bristol, Gloucester and Hereford.

The competition was particularly stiff and both teams performed incredibly well. In the end, our senior team came second to Redland Green School, whose dynamic winning debate centred on the topic, ‘Lying is a necessary evil’.

We are looking forward to next year’s Youth Speaks competition, where we’ll be armed with all that we’ve learnt this year.

Message from Gloucestershire Mainstream Transport Team

"From Friday 1st March 2024 we will be accepting applications for the forthcoming academic year (2024/25).

If you require a Spare Seat for the next academic year, please re-apply by completing an application form, via the website at: https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/transport/school-transport/spare-seat-scheme/

As ever, we recommend you apply early; if you apply before 30th June 2024 your application will be classed as “on time” and you will therefore be more likely to receive a spare seat if one is available. You are not obliged to accept if you are offered a place, so it is advisable to apply even if you are not certain the pass will be required.

You should be aware that our ability to offer places on the scheme is conditional on the number of students eligible for free transport who require use of the service. It is therefore essential that you have alternative transport arrangements planned for the situation in which we are unable to offer a place to your child.

Please be aware that due to the need to prioritise pupils who are entitled to free transport provision, we will only offer spaces once we are sure of the capacity on each route and this may not be until August 2024 or, in some cases, until the school year has started.

Please remember the following as detailed in our terms and conditions:

When allocating spare seat students, priority will be given in the following order:

  1. Students attending the Sixth Form at that specific school.
  2. Students who held a bus pass in the previous academic year and applied before the end of June.
  3. Places will then be allocated in order, based on date of application.

If there is an outstanding balance on your 2023/24 spare seat, we will not be able to offer you a space for the forthcoming academic year until the balance is cleared.

In the interest of safety, no pupil should board or attempt to board a GCC vehicle without a valid pass or authorisation email from the Integrated Transport Unit.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us - 01452 425387 - mainstream@gloucestershire.gov.uk

Kind regards

Mainstream Transport Team"

The Welsh Parliament’s Equality and Social Justics Committee

Senedd Cymru/ The Welsh Parliament’s Equality and Social Justice Committee is made up of six Members of the Senedd from different political parties, representing different parts of Wales. Its role is to look at the Welsh Government's decisions to make sure they’re fit for purpose for the people of Wales.

The Committee is doing a follow-up inquiry on childcare in Wales.  It will look at areas including the extent to which childcare provision in Wales provides high-quality provision which supports child development, tackles child poverty and supports parental employment and what changes might be needed to deliver these outcomes.

It published a report on this subject in January 2022, and now, two years down the line, it’s keen to know what progress has been made and what more there needs to be done. A series of online focus groups with parents from across Wales are being arranged to influence this work and it would like to involve the voices of those with lived experience of childcare, or wishing to access childcare.

Rhys Jones is looking for a group of about 4 – 8 parents or carers who can answer the questions below during an online discussion proposed to be held on
Tuesday 19th March between 12:00pm – 1:30pm

What are the current challenges with childcare in Wales? What more needs to be done?

Your voice is important and can help influence change.  If any parents would like to take part, please contact Rhys directly rhys.jones@senedd.wales.
